Departments were assembly, social, citizenship, and financial, and met twice monthly; cabinet had luncheon sessions every other Thursday Plans were made for formation of separate Junior high departments FOOTBALL, above all other activities, occupied the thoughts of most students for three months. Stars were Alexander and Fea-sell who made the coveted Post All-Suburban Team. Feazell was also chosen on the All-State Team. Hr. Bartlett and Ur. Hovde coached the squads; managers were Smith and Torrey. SKI ITO THE! ALSO SERVE who drill in below-sero weather, who, win or lose, jell and shout just as loudly. Cheerleaders were red-skirted Hines, Weaver, Peters, and Vanderhoof. Kiss Slocum sponsored; Donna Mae Monroe was the only honorary meaner. . . • • .RED AND WHITE SATIN swished, batons twirled, and the best majorette section in the league strutted into view. Head Twirler Mote, Spano, Dicker-son, Ginther, and Waits were seniors MUSICt Orchestra, chorus, and band were the three music organizations to which many students belonged. A Victory Concert and the White Christmas Program were presented by the department under the direction of Mr. Jackson. TWO PLAYS were given at Arvada, one, The Ghost Bird, by the juniors in early December; and the other, Ask Me Another, by the seniors in late April. Miss Wiebelt was junior sponsor. Miss Kratz and Miss Hambly directed the seniors. THE REDSKIN ARROW, under the editorship of Betty Jo Olson, finally became a printed edition. Miss Burrua sponsored.....HIGHLIGHTS OF 44, the Yearbook, was sponsored by Mr. Rowan and edited by Lena Spano and staff; money was handled by Miss Hambly and the business staff. — THE CALL TO ARMS was answered by a large number of Arvada boys, and many more, especially seniors, will enter all branches of the service as soon as school is out. To these boys, and to the girls they left behind to enter Cadet Nursing or other essential work, the war was a very real thing. It taught them to face the future with a grown-up attitude that was strange in teen-agers...The war also brought community bond drives sponsored by the students, new courses in radio, aeronautics, and electricity. SOCIAL: Bressed-up and sport , date and stag, school and Hi-T or Pep Club dances drew student attendance. The only formal affair was the Junior-Senior Prom, held at the Albany. Mary Lee Vanderhoof was queen in 1943. Class and outside assemblies also provided extracurricular interest, as did noon dancing, social hours, and, for freshman and senior girls, the Big Sister teas. BASKETBALL was Arvada's winter sport. Enthusiastic students employed n means of transportation and crowded into gyms in order to attend games. The Red- skins took second place in the Suburban League. Ur. Vanderhoof coached the first string and Mr. Weber, the second. Schoen and Hang were the capable managers. TRACK, the last sport of the season, was coached by Mr. Weber. Arvada had won the Suburban Championship for seven consecutive years, and there was every indication that 19A4 would see the continuation of their winning streak. WRESTLING, boxing, and tumbling presented exhibitions for the first time in 194A Ralph Burtard, member of Mr, Hovde’s wrestling team, placed at the state meet.
