8 To the Administration and the School Board, we give our grateful appreciation for the many things that we have received from them. Our Administration, made up of Mr. Homer N. Peck and Mr. Ray S. Fitzmorris, has labored diligently in our behalf, providing us with able assistance and guidance throughout the six years spent in this building. The School Board composed of Mr. Howard Roepnack, Mr. John E. Olson, Mr. Charles H. havis, Mr. Clyde Morris and Mr. Robert Wilson, develops the policies of the school and settles the problems that may arise in this management. The Board receives little mention other than at the time of the election, and yet it is one of the most important and hardest working bodies in our democratic system of education. The officers—Dale Gatchell, president; Dick Longnecker, vice-president; and Erma Fechner, secretary-treasurer—have done a great deal to make this year a very successful one. Upon the resignation of our former sponsor, Kiss Ethel Dark, the position was immediately filled by Miss Anne Browne, who began plans for the Junior-Senior Prom. Under the able leadership of Martha Mae Newell,Joe Ferina, Robert Muench, and Fred Weaver, the Sophomore Class has been making a place for itself in Arvada Hi h School..Numerically the largest class in the school, they have been trying to make themselves the most powerful. In the fall they presented a clever assembly program, which proved that they have real histrionic ability. Sophomores heve figured prominently in football, basketball, track, and pep club. Several members of the class h8d leading roles in the annuel operetta, and many were in the chorus. In April they sponsored the picture Escape at the Arvada Theater. At present they April they sponsored the pictureftEscapeMat the Arvada Theater. At present they are formulating plans for giving their prom, which they are looking forward to next year. The footsteps of one hundred and ten freshmen sounded in the halls of Arvada High School on registration day, September 29-30, 1940. They elected Eugene Feazell, president; Bill Jump, vice-president; Betty Dean Mote, secretary; and Johnny Miller, treasurer; who, with the class sponsor. Miss Ellen Hambly, cooperated whole-heartedly on the undertaking of any activity. Social life began with the first class party, the outstanding event of the year. Later in the year an all-school party was given, at which a large group of freshmen were present. In February they entertained the upper-classmen at an assembly program In which 25 freshmen participated. Athletics, Twirlers, Glee Clubs, Future Homemakers, and Future Farmers of America are some of the forms of activities in which freshmen have participated. We will strive to develop a greater spirit of cooperation among classmates; a desire to share responsibilities, whether individually or collectively;and Increase the initiative of fellow students in future years at Arvada High School. t b Third row: J.Mortenson, L.Boatright, R.Smith, G.Flori, J.Loveall, L. First row: Coach Bartlett, C.Tometich, L.Feazell, V.Wertin, B.Jump, M.Hill, N. Keller, P.Dawkins, W.Smith, S.Baker, J.Headrick, Dee Staley. With each member of the team giving his best for the school and the new coaches, Mr. Joe Weber and Mr. Bob Bartlett, this year’s football team began the season with determination to finish as high in league standings as possible. Both the fans and the coaches were optimistic, as there was a letter man for every position except left end. Golden, defending champions, and Wheatridge had stronger teams and finished ahead of the Redskins. However, our boys played clean ball and were good sports throughout the season. Three of the Redskins were honored by being placed on the all-conference team. They were: Charles Tometich, fullback; Glen Ross, end; and Bud Dawkins, guard. The schedule: We They Westminister 6 0 Golden 6 6 Aurora 6 0 Hugo 19 18 Wheatridge 0 14 Littleton 26 0 Golden 0 19 Aurora 19 26 North 0 33 Wheatridge 14 6 Littleton 6 6 JUALL Top row Duane Sanborn Kenny Black Warren West John Wear Glenn Ross Bob Schoen Charlie Tometich Coach Vanderhoof First row Gordon Koon Bob Larsen Vincent Wert in Howard Motoyama Kick Keller Although the Redskins were unable to retain their league crown, they climaxed a fine season by driving hard at the close to reach a tie for second place. Starting out with a bang, the Redskins easily took the first two league tilts against Wheatrldge and Littleton. Next week the Redskins dropped into a gradual decline, losing two hard fought games on their own floor to Golden and Aurora. The losing streak continued the following week, as the Farmers of Wheatrldge avenged their first round defeat at the hands of the Redskins,by returning the compliment. At the same time that we slumped into the losing session,we suffered a severe blow in the los3 of Robert Muench, who was unable to play again this season because of an injury to his knee. With but three games remaining, the Redskins again struck their stride, and in close,hard-fought games managed to wrest the last three contests from their opponents, thus tying with Golden for second. Redskins again were the victims of the Demon attack and so lost a berth in the District Meet, but they remained tied for second in the league. The loss of many seniors last year does not discourage the Arvada track team, which is determined to win the fifth straight league championship this spring. The boys, under the direction of Coach Joe Weber, expect to win first place in the State B meet, which they so narrowly lost last year. Since the Arvada boys have won the cup at the Mines Meet for the last four years, they are qualified for the State Meet, and have no intentions of giving up their cup. Each boy has tried his best to win a place on the team so that he could Journey to Greeley or Colorado Springs early this season, and to Golden and Boulder for the District and State Meets. The A Club of Arvada High School is an organization for the boys who have earned a letter in any sport in this high school. The Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet was held in the high school gymnasium. Decorations were in black and white musical motifs, carrying out the theme of Melody Manor, a modern night club. The table decorations, programs, and invitations also carried out this theme. The ceiling was studded with black and white musical notes hung in a circular pattern.Prom the center hung a revolving ball covered with tiny mirrors. Colored lights transformed the room into an enchanting spectacle. Toasts from a schoolboard member, our superintendent, and the presidents of the classes followed the dinner. Entertainment was then provided in the auditorium by members of the faculty and the student body. Immediately after the program, dancing began in the gymnasium to the sparkling rhythm of Bill Petrie's orchestra. The Junior Class president,Kenneth Black, placed a floral crown upon the head of Mildred Gatchell, the Prom 4ueen. The Juniors were hosts to the Senior Class at the annual Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom held in the high school gymnasium May 24, 1941. At both ends of the room ice blue satin drops were accented by a huge, shaded rainbow. The tables of snow white were touched with bright spring flowers; the nut-cups were Individual pots of gold. Following the luscious dinner served by the Junior Mothers, toasts were given bv Superintendent Homer N. Peck, president of the board, Howard Roepnack, and class presidents.
