Of this number ten are seniors who will probably be replaced next year by six high school beginners and five members of the grade band who will enter next fall. Betty White has been the drum majorette this year and Gene Hoke the librarian. ln addition to the regular concert band there are several ensembles who expect to enter the spring contests. They are as follows: one B Clarinet quartet, one French Horn quartet, one saxophone quartet, and one brass quartet. Gene Haney, William Bryner, Marjorie Ryan, David Wise, Rose Stock, William Oye, and Billy Watkins will also participate in the contests as soloists. The band began its activities this year with a public appearance at the football games. They are to be particularly commended for their part in the Homecoming parade and the field show which was given during the halves of the game. ln addition to school functions they appeared in the Army-Navy E program given by the Progress Manufacturing Co. They also led the Hal- loween parade which was given for the public. The Winter concert presented December l7th proved such a success that plans are being made for a spring concert which is an annual affair. Versatility is one of the bands outstanding traits. They have played everything from super-fine to boogie-Woogie , the latter was a pleasant surprise to the basketball fans. Members of the group plan to participate in the Band Clinic with Mt. Zion, Cerro Gordo, Sullivan, and other schools this spring. They will also be entered in the district solo and ensemble contest, April 2lg the section solo and ensemble contest, May 5, and the recital of solos and ensembles on April 8. The school is proud of this fine organization and its director, Mr. Smith. 26

HO TECOMINC- HOMECOMING QUEEN AND COURT Lois, De-Witt, Senior Attendantq Bettyjone Hansen, Sophomore Attendant, Martorie Ryan Queen, LaVon Eads, Freshman Attendant, Gordon Galbreath, Football Captain Hoinecomingfs-an event which everyone looks forward to every year, October 25th brought us typical football weather. The first of the important events was the parade. For several days, students had been busy putting llast minute touches on their floats. Each cherished a hope that his float would bring the five dollar prize. The freshman had a Red Cross Hospital theme which received the first prize. The sophomores used Shine on, Harvest Moonng the juniors, 'South Sea lslands , and the seniors The Southern Belief Each float showed that much work and careful planning had been done After the parade, we gathered along the sidelines to watch the Tuscola Warriors and the Arthur Knights play an exciting game. The Knights put up o valiant struggle but were unable to overcome the size advantage of the Warriors. We were scalped l8-l2. The evening s entertainment began with the Homecoming play, Mumba- lumbou, under the direction of Miss Palmer. This play was a fine production Ben Bradley and his orchestra furnished the music for the dancing which began at 9:30 The main highlight of the evenings entertainment was the coronation ceremony at ll:3O. A call to attention was played by the orches tra and the grand march began. The queen, Marjorie Ryan, was attended by Lois DeWitt, Bettyjane Hansen, and LaVon Eads. Gordon Galbreath crowned the queen and presented gifts to each of the attendants. The evening was soon over, and the l944 Homecoming was recorded 'ic great sitccessw. fEdith Moody 25

Most of the photography was finished before the first semester was completed. The staff has devoted hours to selling ads, writing script, laying out the dummy, and actually completing the job lt is their hope that you will derive as much pleasure from reading this book as they have had in preparing it. 27
