He graduated from the University of California on Iune 14, 1968 and was commissioned through the NROTC program. As a junior officer, he served on the following ships: USS JENKINS CDD-4471, USS BENICIA CPG-963. USS LAWRENCE CDDG-41 and USS BARNSTABLE COUNTY QLST-11973. He served as Executive Officer onboard USS SYLVANIA QAFS-31 and commanded three ships: USS ADROIT CMSO-5091, USS DETECTOR fMSO-4291 and USS GRAY IFF-10541. Captain Van Saun served in Washington D.C. at the Naval Telecommunications Command as the Head of Manpower and Training Division and as Assistant Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Training. For advanced education he attend Naval Postgraduate School and graduated with distinction with a Masters of Science in Management in December 1992. He also attended the Command and Staff Course at the Naval War College, graduating inlune 1980. Later, he again attended the Naval War College in 1987 for the Integrated Warfare Course. In November 1987, Captain Van Saun reported to Commander, SEVENTH Fleet embarked on USS BLUE RIDGE ILCC-191 as the Surface Warfare Plans Officer. From March 1989 until June 1990, he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans and Policy. Selected as a CNO Fellow, he served as member of Strategic Studies Group X from August 1990 until june 1991. He served as Com- manding Officer, Naval Station Mayport Florida from August 1991 until Iune 1992. His most recent assignment was as the first Commander, Afloat Training Group, At- lantic from June 1992 untilAugust 1993. In October 1993, he reported as Commander, Destroyer Squadron TWO FOUR, homeported in Mayport, Florida. Captain Van Saun has been awarded the Legion of Merit Cthree awardsj and the Navy Commendation Medal Cthree awardsj. Captain Van Saun is married to the former Doris V Carter Pace of Lexington, Kentucky. He has two children, Deborah and Michael and two stepsons, Christopher and Brian. 3

COMMA DI G OFFICER -fi l :mrs Vw! CDR Denis V Army y Commander Denis V Army was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts. He graduated from Holy Cross College in 1975 and was commissioned an Ensign through the NROTC program upon graduation. Commander Army's initial assignment was onboard USS DAHLGREN QDDG-431 as Assistant CIC Officer, then CIC Officer and finally Operations Officer. He then attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey California and was awarded a Masters Degree with distinction in Computer Systems Management. Upon graduation from the postgraduate program, Commander Army attended Department Head School in Newport, Rhode lsland and subsequently served as Weapons Officer on USS CLAUDE V RICKETTS KDDG- 51 and as Combat Systems Officer on the Staff of DESTROYER SQUADRON TWO. After completing his Department Head tours, 2 Commander Army served as the Operational Test Director for the Navy's Advanced Combat Direction System CACDSD and Command and Control Processor CCPZD on the Navy's Operational Test and Evaluation Force staff. He then assumed duties as Executive Officer onboard USS COMTE DE GRASSE fDD- 9741 and served in that position from September 1987 until September 1989. Commander Army served as Strategic Concepts! Policy Officer on the staff of Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic CSACLANTD from November 1989 until March 1993. He took command of USS ARTHUR W. RADFORD IDD-9681 in September 1993. Commander Army is married to the former Elizabeth Fouratt of Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania. They reside in Virginia Beach with their two children, Sarah and Matthew.

Ponsolle, originally from lNhittier, California, graduated from California State University at Ful- lerton with a B.S. in applied math. He initially served onboard USS DUPONT KDD-9415 as M division officer, First Lieuten- ant and Navigator. Following Nuclear power school, he reported aboard USS NIMITZ ICVN-683 for duty as Reactor Mechanical assistant and qualified as a Nuclear Power Engineering Officer of the watch. Subsequently he attended Department Head school in Newport, Rhode Island and reported to USS CONYNGHAM KDDG-173 as the Combat Systems Officer. Commander Ponsolle assumed duties as Executive Officer of USS ARTHUR W. RADFORD CDD-9683 on 13 October 1992. Commander Ponsolle's billets ashore include Course co- ordinator for Main Propulsion Assistant QMPAD and shift coor- dinator for the Propulsion Plant Trainer at Surface Warfare Officer School Command in Newport, Rhode Island. Most re- cently he served as Combat Systems instructor at the Senior Officer 's Ship's material readiness course. Commander Ponsolle recently returned to Newport, Rhode Island for duty at Surface Warfare Officer School Command. Among his decorations are two Navy Commendation Medals and two Navy Achievement Medals. Commander Ponsolle and his wife Barbara reside in Newport Rhode Island with their daughter, Elizabeth. 4 OFFICERS Present sis LCDR B. H. McCombie Lieutenant Commander Bruce H. McCombie was born in Wilmington, Delaware and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylva- nia. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1978 and was commissioned through the Officer Candidate Program in 1980. Lieutenant Commander McCombie's initial assignment was aboard USS MIDWAY QCV-411 as Deck Division officer. Following completion of Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer CASWOJ school he served as ASW officer onboard USS KNOX QPF-10523. After his tour as Combat Systems instructor at Department Head School in Newport, Rhode Island, he attended Surface Warfare Officer School Command, also 111 Newport, Rhode Island, for Department Head School. He subsequently served on USS GLOVER QFF-10981 215 Weapons Officer, USS WILLIAM H. STANDLEY fCG-323 HS Combat Systems Officer and on COMCRUDESGRU EIGHT staff as Flag Secretary, Communications officer and Schedules officer. Lieutenant Commander McCombie's awards include the Navy Commendation Medal, N avyAchievement Medal, Merl- torious Unit Commendation award, Humanitarian Medal and National Defense Medal. Lieutenant Commander McCombie is married to the former Susan Cook of West Franklin, New Hampshire. They reside in Virginia Beach with their three children, Ryan, Daniel and Kathryn.
