The trees so green, the dandelions yellow, Blend in the scene, so soft and mellow. It’s not in life we become so bold, It’s what’s inside us, stories untold. When we are lost and cannot find What’s in the storehouse of our mind, We turn to something warm and plain To it our bodies and minds refrain. Top scores were shot by Harris who averaged 80.5, Sieggreen with 83.6, and Dennis Wenzel and Mike Fischer who each averaged 87. The Junior Varsity team finished the season with an 8-1 record. Bill McIntosh and Dave Abbott checked in consistently with good scores. -82- Seasons come, and seasons go, but it appears that there will always be an Arthur Hill swimming team to capture the Valley Championship. The Hillites qualified 34 swimmers for the finals. -and walked away with the 32nd title. Hugo Braun, Rob Dietzel and Dan Maas swam well all year, and paced the team to an 11-2 season record. Captain Pat Furlo was the only swimmer to qualify for the state meet with a time of 59.0 in the 100 yard backstroke. Valley records were also set by Dietzel in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.6, and the 400 free relay team of Braun, Maas, Furlo and Dietzel with a time of 3:30.9. ‘“‘We received strong leadership from our seniors this year,’’ commented Coach Kent Howenstein, ‘‘and we should have equally strong leadership and next.’’ TANKERS STROKE TO THIRTY-SECOND TITLE 1. SPIKERS JOIN NEW LEAGUE Volleyball continues to grow in popularity and competition throughout the state. The addition of the new Saginaw Valley League and a state wide tournament has made it even more popular in this area. Most of the girl’s matches this season consisted of three games. The team is made up of 2 seniors, 4 juniors, and 3 sophomores on the varsity. The team’s basic drawback this year was height, but the girls do have a lot of desire and move well. The Arthur Hill team was led by 5’1’’ Norma Kleinbriel and 5’5’”’ sophomore Jean Finch. Julie Downey and Shelly Kakoska led the sophomores and have been showing improvement. BASEBALL TEAM TIES FOR SECOND | | | | | | Arthur Hill’s baseball team finished with a 10-11 record overall and a 7-7 record for the 1975 season. Senior Tom Nichols carried a big bat q to the plate, and averaged .343 for 67 if times at bat. Bill Schulz and John Alfano averaged .338 and .321 respect- ively. Alfano was tops on the mound, | chalking up a 3-1 record for the season. | | Nichols was chosen to play in the all-star game at Bay City Memorial Field. y= oll 4 = % OY 1. Jim Wallace and Mark Reinig are two good reasons for giving the 1976 Arthur Hill track team a second look. Although the ‘75 season was not a winning one, it was an improved one. Mike Brechtelsbauer did well in the pole vault while the sophomores Dave Farley and Dennis Hammond put in good times in the 440 and 880 respect- tively. The 880 yard run was also Wallace’s strong event and he posted a top time of 2:00.9. Reinig heaved the shotput 50’7’’. “Our main goal this year,’”’ says Coach Bill Johnson ‘‘is to get many young men out and working hard toward individual as well as team improvement.” SEASON LOOKS BRIGHTER FOR TRACK TEAM 1. Mark Reinig really gets his weight into the shotput. 2. Trying for just a little more height, is pole vaulter Mike Brechtelsbauer. 3. Craig Stoltz shows his form in the hurdles. 4. Coach Daniel McShannock watches on as Hillite runners warm up. The ‘‘Legenda”’ went to press before this year’s Girls Track Team began competitive meets. This year’s team will participate in a total of twelve meets. In past years they have competed in only three. 1. Lorenza Ramos and Laura Schaper. 2. Mary Bradtke and Eunice McClenon. 3. Sue Fallis and Alicia Cormier. 4. Carolyn Glynn. GIRL HARRIERS RUN WILD CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS MAKE GOOD EFFORT 1. Undaunted by the inclement weather (L. to R.) Mark Downing, John Leikert, and Dennis Hammond run on through the mist. 2. Al Derheim and Steve Sopcak ‘‘keep on trackin’.”’ Running Cross-Country is not the easiest sport in school. It requires many hours of training, more than most other sports. For that reason alone, Cross Country runners deserve more credit than they normally get. Arthur Hill’s Cross Country team is no exception, and with the help of Coach E. Petzko they managed to record some outstanding individual statistics. Steve Sopcak, Al Derheim and John Leikert all placed high in meets and recorded top times of 16:37.5, 16:44, and 16:37 respectively. As a team, Arthur Hill’s highest place was fifth in both the Saginaw County and Saginaw Valley meets. 1. Stu Franc ke gets his whole body into his serve. 2. NETTERS LOOK TOWARD A PROMISING SEASON Finishing the 1974-1975 season with a 5-8 record, Arthur Hill’s tennis team showed much potential, as the squad was composed of sophomores and juniors only. Even though they were unable to climb above the .500 mark, they did manage to put on some outstanding performances. First seed Stu Francke and fourth seed Brian Taylor compiled the best records, 9-4 and 8-5 respectively. Second and third seeds Jay Stringer and Jeff Becker also turned in some good performances. 1. The bell has rung, it’s three o’clock, It’s time to get on home. Now the years go by so quickly, They used to feel so long. But this one will be ending now, I can’t believe it’s gone. Those happy times, those memories, Have vanished into space. Though they’re locked inside this lonely mind, They can never be replaced. Phil Thon Sophomore .-The season’s changing, from warm sunny summer days. --To cool crisp autumn days. .-The bright mellow colors of living things are changing and will soon die, but only until the last frost of winter leaves and sunshine again enriches the earth. --People are changing, too. The younger persons are turning to adults. Learning, experiencing, loving, hoping. .-Children begin to ask about life and marvel at the world. . Elderly people just enjoy what’s left of life and stop worrying so much about tomorrow. .-It’s funny how the seasons and people are really one in the same. This was the 1867-71 school year, and only three students finished the courses. The old Arthur Hill High School, on Court Street, was opened in 1889 with one-tenth of the students being foreign pupils. Arthur Hill, at the present location, was opened in January of 1941. Choir was one of the first extra curricular activities that was added to the schools ever growing list of functions. The first high school science laboratory was purchased by S. R. Dewey in the year 1869. The courses of study in the first high school was trigonometry, English literature, and astronomy. Mind science and science of government were stricken from the list of requirements and the course in algebra was modified. Latin and geometry were offered and modern language courses were limited. In 1879 the tenth class of Arthur Hill had graduated. In 1883 the honorable Arthur Hill presented his magnificent gift to the high school: a present of perpetual scholarships to the Univer- sity of Michigan. One of the oldest advertisers in the LEGENDA is Case’s Funeral Home, who advertised in the 1901 LEGENDA and had continued to do so until this date. Saginaw is the only community in outstate Michigan which had both of its high schools accredited by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges by 1904. No schools in the state were ac- credited earlier than 1904. CLOCKWISE: 1. Shot-put was played back in the 30’s. 2. The first Arthur Hill High School was located on Court Street. 3. Cooking classes, in the 20’s, cooked over open coil stoves. 4. The “‘gang”’ still crowded together for a friendly shot. 5. The parking lot was not as crowded as it is today in the 70’s. Check out the autos. 6. Students are changing classes at the “‘old school.’’ 7. Knickers? Only Detroit also had two of its high schools accredited first in that year. A.H. was the first accredited by the State of Michigan (for which the University of Michigan is the ac- crediting agency) in 1880. Accreditation by both agencies NCA and the State has been continuous since the initial dates. Girls’ Glee Club started in 1911 and was an inspiring touch to Arthur Hill. The school’s orchestra was started in 1920. The Little Brown Jug was first awarded to Arthur Hill’s football team in 1922. Also in 1922 the Ippel Cup was awarded for scholastic excellence. 1931 marked the year that the football team had a 4 win 3 loose record. They had come a long way since the team began in 1895. The 1930 News staff was given an actual newsroom and the National Honor Society began with 26 members. A copy of the 1938 Arthur Hill Home News had an article on the condition of the Annex building next to the old Arthur Hill building. It stated that the school annex was built during the Civil War and had gone through everything ‘from machine guns, surgery, the first pony express to dynamite.’’ The school at this time held 1,465 students. Years earlier the enrollment was only 729 pupils. The school had no labs, cafeteria, auditorium, football field, baseball diamond or modern class- rooms. At this time a decision was made to build a new high school for the city of Saginaw. Taking one and a half years to complete, the present A.H.H.S. was opened in 1941, and the graduating class of’42 had 519 seniors. -18T- The Second World War was rapidly accelerating and students helped the country by collecting various scraps and rationing gasoline and food. The years passed and the school added new dimensions to teaching. Clubs and athletic activities expanded and students as well as the teachers began to get involved. Drivers training, pep bands, and debate teams are just a few of the numerous activites that students could choose from to occupy their time and expand their horizons. 1946 was the year in which the swimming team took their first re- gional championship. 1949 was another big year for the Hilllites. Memorial Stadium was built and the first football game was played that fall. History again recorded a first for the Hillites. The city’s first school swimming pool was completed in 1957. Arthur Hill was thought to be one of the most modern and best equipped school, as well as being a beautiful sight in the city. Mr. Harold Giesecke, our present principal, assumed his position in 1963. The 1973 football season also marked a first with the Lumberjacks going unscored upon and undefeated. The football team had come a long way since it’s 4-3 record in the 30’s. Now in 1976 Arthur Hill faces the issues of cross town busing and budget cutbacks. Like in the past, the school will always try it’s best to provide the best education it can to students. Arthur Hill hasn’t really changed over the years it has existed. Surely the number of students has increased, the once sparkling new school is aging and new teaching methods and equip- ment have been placed at student and teacher disposal. It is still a place of great growth. Voices of students, past and present, memories of victories on the fields, tears of joy and sorrow, feelings of acceptance and hopes and dreams for success in the future are some things that have never, and will never change. CLOCKWISE . Lunch hour in the cafeteria was quite a social hour. . The track and football field in underway. . Assemblies were a time to sleep, talk, or pay attention. . Ye old football team, only 10 players. . Changing classes was a cold task. . Unidentified flute player practices in the music room. Again, the push is on to change classes. . Election time was, in the 50’s, a big event. WONAMAM PwON Ee Long skirts, crewcuts and seamed stockings were all the rage. The above information has been obtained from old Legenda and Arthur Hill newspapers. ‘Sei Bae theirs ee 2 EVERY MAN HAS HIS DAYDREAMS, EVERY MAN HAS HIS GOAL, PEOPLE LIKE THE WAY DREAMS HAVE OF STICKING TO THE SOUL.
