Students participate in school, national politics ‘Student Government is only what each student helps to make it,’’ said Jay Roberts, Student Cabinet president. Each Wednesday the twenty- five Cabinet members met to discuss school problems. Open Forum was also held, where any student could give his criticisms and sug- gestions to Cabinet members. Committees were formed by Cabinet to work on the revision of smoking rules and the pos- sibility of open dances. Other priorities were to raise money for new lighting, cooler type drinking fountains throughout the school, and to repave the parking lot. With the passage of the eighteen year old vote law, many students became more than just political onlookers. Campaign ’72 helped generate political awareness as local, state and national candidates made appearances in Saginaw. Among these were Presidential nominees Richard Nixon and Senator George McGovern, and Senator Rob- ert Griffin, candidate for the U.S. Senate.
