Today we are changing for tomorrow. Erec- ting new buildings and destroying the old. Mixing men and women so their minds may grow equally. Exposing new ideas and experiencing their results. Modernizing schools with better teaching methods. Today we are helping our friends and learning from them in return. Slowly we are growing and maturing, because tomorrow we will be the adults. Everyone will have a chance to live, but only if they keep pace with today’s changes for tomorrow. Legenda 5 Pita sesso Activities Today we are preparing for tomorrow. Every- thing we do or say will effect our future. A high school athlete may someday join a national team. ‘One school’s actress may become a broadway star. But few of us will reach such fame. Most will have an average, but happy, life. The people we meet will influence our outlook on the future. The songs we sing will be rem- embered years from now. Today we are seeking goals and making plans, for tomorrow belongs to the young. Legenda 7 Nostalgia makes debut on Hillite scene Fashions in ’73 were above and below the knee. Mini dresses and midi coats, bell bottom flares, blazers, smocks and halter tops were part of Hil- lites’ attire. The fads of yesterday were the fads of today. Yo-yo’s made a smashing comeback along with tennis shoes and stylish hats. Dark fingernail polish and glossy lipstick were popular among the girls. In men’s wear no drastic changes were seen. Wider ties stayed “in” and plain white shirts rose in popularity. The most noticeable men’s fashion was shoes. New fabrics, different tex- tures, and higher heels all helped make footwear attractive. Legenda 9 Students participate in school, national politics ‘Student Government is only what each student helps to make it,’’ said Jay Roberts, Student Cabinet president. Each Wednesday the twenty- five Cabinet members met to discuss school problems. Open Forum was also held, where any student could give his criticisms and sug- gestions to Cabinet members. Committees were formed by Cabinet to work on the revision of smoking rules and the pos- sibility of open dances. Other priorities were to raise money for new lighting, cooler type drinking fountains throughout the school, and to repave the parking lot. With the passage of the eighteen year old vote law, many students became more than just political onlookers. Campaign ’72 helped generate political awareness as local, state and national candidates made appearances in Saginaw. Among these were Presidential nominees Richard Nixon and Senator George McGovern, and Senator Rob- ert Griffin, candidate for the U.S. Senate. The Hillite Marching Band’s halftime perfor- mance was climaxed with Queen Joan Middle- dorf, her attendants Karen Leckie and Kim Reis, and the court circling the football field. The score reached 39-6 with the crowd cheering the Lumberjacks to a victory over Bay City Handy. After the game many Hillites attended the cel- ebration in the gym. An average sophomore struggling to stay awake in study hall. She had just come from second hour and the lecture the class received was the in- spiration for a quick cat nap. Study halls were a part of school most sopho- mores had to face. For people without homework they were useless, time consuming, and incred- ibly boring. While the clock’s hands slowly rotated, she thought of her next class and it’s elementary movies supposedly created for high school stu- dents. In many courses films helped pupils obtain a better understanding of the subject. But there was an abundance of movies that insulted their viewers with a kindergarten- style. After lunch, her class held a discussion about required subjects. “Required courses shouldbe abolished. A student won’t learn if he’s not interested.” Some agreed with her, but others argued that they worked better under pressure. The period ended and a final question came up, “Why are some students bored in school, and some not?” The teacher answered as best as he could. “School is only interesting to interesting people. The value of an education should not be dic- tated to a student—it is up to the individual to accept and experience the gift he aquires.” As the class was dismissed, she heard a friend comment, “There’s nothing more boring than a lecture on education.” RIGHT: A student relieves the mono- tony of school by doodeling. This guy ahead of us can’t find a parking place. Wait! Is that one over there? I’m so confused.” Whether you’re a sophomore or a senior, con- fusion always envelops the first day of school. Everything seems mixed up—classrooms, hall- ways, the parking lot, and the kids. “Now all we have to do is carve a path through the hallway. Oh my gosh! Did you see that guy entering the girls’ bathroom?” Lunch money, schedules, the right exits and the wrong entrances. It seems there’s no end to the school day maze. “Hey Sue! How did you like Arthur Hill? Did you get around o.k.?” “Sure. I’ve been completely organized the entire day—except, oh, I’m wearing my lockermate’s coat.” Legenda 17 ABOVE AND ABOVE RIGHT: A rep- resenative from the Atomic Energy Commission checks Bob Ortman and Kim Maier for radio-active materials. Senior Bob Miller, chairman of student activ- ities, said, “The Student Cabinet is trying to make assemblies more interesting so more students will come.” Among the assemblies was a group of singers, The Connection, sponsored by Campus Life, a religious organization. Another program tried to interest Hillites in Junior Achivement. A talent show was suggested by the seniors as a way of financing their trip. “If there’s interest, there’ll be assemblies,” said Mr. Jensen. Legenda 19 Plays offer challenges for student entertainers The 1972 musical production was the Rodgers and Hammerstein presentation of “Oklahoma!” The play complicated itself with a double love triangle. Legenda 21 H i 2 ! é ; Restless seniors endure spring semester Ever notice someone next to you in the hall acting a bit strange? Next time you hear someone belting out an Irish drinking song whild doing a little jig, ask him what class he’s in. Chances are this dingbat is a senior. After thirteen years in school, the knowledge that he will soon be graduating hasavery strange effect on the average senior. Individual reactions may vary, but all seniors fit into one of the three basic catagories. By the end of January, most college-bound seniors have heard from the college of their choice. To the senior reading his acceptance letter, the tear of joy soon becomes a tear of anguish as he reads the last paragraph, which often requests a deposit toward his first semester. Some seniors have been rejected by the college of their choice. To these unfortunate souls is given the Herculean task of completing ap- plications to community colleges by the deadlines. The second group of seniors include those who do not plan to attend college. They endure the long dull hours of the spring semester to earn a diploma and, hopefully to better their chances in the job market. The final group includes the apathetic seniors. Not aiming for college, or even a regular job, a few students for get about the second semester and end up dropping out or being kicked out for skipping. Second semester seniors all have one thing in common—the desire to graduate with the least possible effort and do it without going crazy. The Michigan Plaque was awarded to Jim Jones for his leadership ability, athletic performance and scholastic excellence. Gretchen Vanderklipp received the Civitan Award for her conduct, scholarship, participation in school activities, and moral integrity. Arthur Hill inducted 118 students into the National Honor Society in 1972. Jack Champagne and Hope Meyer were chosen “Outstanding Sophomore Boy and Girl” for 1972. Jack was guard on the basketball team, center on the JV football team and third baseman on the JV baseball team. Hope wasactive in Spanish Club and a member of the JV Pom Pom squad. Both students maintained a high grade point average. The library received new book cases to ac- comodate the new books, according to Librarian Miss Mildred Costa. Several memorial gifts were given by friends and families of deceased students and alumni. The team’s leading scorer was Jesse Salas. He scored 256 points for a 13.5 average. From the free throw line Dave Visuri hit 69.5%, the team’s best. Legenda 51 Moran sets record; Hillites champs again Under the new leadership of Coaches Kent Howenstine and Gary Barker, the swim team had another outstanding season, finishing with a 12-1 record and a first in the Valley West Conference. “Our swimmers were willing to work harder and give a little bit more than our opponents were willing to,” said Coach Howenstine. Coach Barker worked with the _ divers. Throughout the year Greg Moran was the number one diver on the team, and in the state. Compiling 280 points in his last dual meet, Greg set a school record. Arthur Hill sent two swimmers and two divers to the state meet. Hillite swimmer’s were Dan Hoffman and Pete Thompson. Dan’s qualifying time for the 50 yard freestyle was 23.3 seconds, while his best time for the year was 23.1 seconds. In the 100 yard breast stroke, Pete’s qualifying time was 1.06:3. Mr. Howenstine used girls as managers in Maine before he came to Arthur Hill. There are several obvious disadvantages to having girls on an all male team, but Coach Howenstine said the advantages equalled out the disadvantages. ‘Girls are better typers,” he quipped. Beth McIntyre, Lynn Fielder and Buffy Alsgarrd became the first girls in Arthur Hill’s history to manage a boys’ varsity sport. They were given the same tasks and responsibilities as previous male managers. They served as timers at practice, inventoried the team equipment, typed master dittos of meet results, ran off the dittos, took care of the warm-up clothes (the suits worn over swim trunks during meets) and generally looked after the team. Coach Gary Barker explained how the girls were chosen. “An announcement was made for all girls interested in the position to report to Coach Howenstine. Senior boys then voted on the girls. Beth, Lynn, and Buffy won.” Coach Barker liked the idea and said it worked well. Bill Schumacher, a junior on the swim team said, “T really like girl swim managers. They are definitely better for morale!”’ Steve Trace, a senior with three years on the team, liked the girl managers. He said they worked harder to prove their ability. Beth explained why she wanted to become a manager, “I am interested in swimming and I am also interested in boys. Why better way to suit this interest than to join a guys team?” Legenda 5S Inexperience shows in wrestler’s record “Losing seven key members due to jobs, injuries, other sports, and change of residence hurt us severely,” said Coach Richard Bistline about his varsity wrestling team. The team finished fifth in the Valley West Conference with a 2-10 record. The team’s captain and most valuable player was George Huegel. He took second in the Valley meet in his class weight. Coach Bistline cited Ken Meyerholt and Paul Sipiala as two of the top wrestlers on the team. Due to injuries to some of the top wrestlers, no Hillites qualified for regional or state meets. The varsity team had a 2-10 record, while the junior varsity complied an 8-4 record. Janice Masiea-and Vickie Klaczkiewicz were named most valuable varsity players. Janice was team captain, while Vickie scored a team high of 60 points. On the JV team, Theresa Russell was the captain and Julie Blodgett was the team’s most valuable player. She was high scorer with 135 points. “With only one returning varsity player this year, the lack of experience showed in the girls’ volleyball record,” said Coach Teter. The team finished with a 1-6 record. “Inexperience hurt the girls’ swim team, but the new junior high school program should help improve the girl’s record,” said Coach Margaret Dietrich. The team’s record was 0-6. Pat Brewer, the most valuable player, was the only girl on the team to go to the state meet. Her time in the 400 yard freestyle was 5:17.43. New supplies such as films and records aided students and helped stimulate interest. Miss Struthers and other teachers began devising a system of replacing phonograph records with tape recordings. This would enable classes to listen to damage-free recordings. Not only would tapes be used in classrooms, but students would also be able to check them out for use at home. A master tape would be kept of each recording, so if any tapes were erased, they could be re- recorded. If completed, the system would go into effect next year. One hundred and fifteen students went on the English Department’s annual field trip to Strat- ford, Ont. The excursion included seeing Shakes- peare’s comedy, “As You Like It,” and dinner in Sarnia, Ont. 62 AHHS TOP CENTER: Students participate in a discussion in Mrs. Harrison’s 20th Century American Literature class. Photography added to j ournalism curriculum The Publications Department expanded by adding photography to the curriculum. Students learned how to handle cameras, develop film, and make enlargements. The course proved popular, as there -were four full classes first semester. The spring 1972 Arthur Hill News received “All American” ratings from the National Scho- lastic Press Association (NSPA). The paper achei- ved a “mark of distinction” in each of the five catagories judged. Mr. Marshall Matlock returned to advise the 1972-73 News after a year’s leave of absence. In order to cut costs, the 1973 Legenda staff “pasted up” the entire yearbook for the first time. The money saved went into improving the book by adding more pages and special effects. Legenda adviser was Mr. Darrel K. Emerson Students attended various journalism workshops throughout the year. Mr. Emerson and four stu- dents went to a Central Michigan University work- shop held during the summer. The NSPA confer- ence held in Chicago during Thanksgiving vacation was attended by Mr. Matlock and four students. Legenda 65 Students study culture, customs of other lands with foreign languages Foreign Language Department organized trips to Europe during Easter Vacation. David Rowell’s and Miss Deford’s Spanish classes studied Spanish Culture and customs along with regular lessons in grammar and literature. The number of German classes offered increased from four to five. Mr. E.G. The Economics requirement was dropped for seniors and juniors. Michigan law still required graduates to earn one-half credit in government. Seniors and juniors who passed guidance class needed two units of Social Studies credit to grad- uate. They were to be earned in U.S. History, government and one-half credit in an elective. However, any senior that failed guidance class, was required to make up that credit withone-half credit in a Social Studies elective. “Instead of being lock- stepped into U.S. History I first semester, juniors may have a choice of studying specific eras in history,’? said Mr. Shackleford. U.S. Civil War, 20th Century U.S. History, and U.S. Colonial period were among the suggested courses. Mr. Shackleford hoped the relaxation of require- ments, and offering more specialized classes would generate student interest. Legenda 69 Classes take field trips to supplement learning Overall enrollment for Science Department went down slightly according to Mr. Frederick Case, department head. He cited major causes of the decrease as students going to the Career Opportunity Center and a general decrease in Arthur Hill’s enrollment. The department sponsored several field trips. Crafts I, changed to a one semester course, was a prerequisite for the new crafts courses. Ceramics and Jewelry were added to the curri- culum, causing an added interest and an increased enrollment. General Art, taught by Mrs. Marianne Vitito, was composed of mainly sophomores and begin- ning art students. Arts and Crafts, also taught by Mrs. Vitito, offered a wide variety of projects which could be done by the students. “The students are more or less free to pick their own projects with the idea that they will learn how to do different things by watching other students do them,” said Mrs. Vitito. 84 AHHS f e eS ABOVE LEFT: Kim Davis hammers in a design on a ring for Jewelry class. Average class load for COC students was three classes at their high school and 2 1 2 hours at COC. Second semester, students could take two classes at their high school. For one year (two semesters) of satisfactory work at COC, students received 2 1 2 credits. COC was opened to juniors and seniors in the Saginaw City School District on Oct. 1, 1972, said Mr. Ray Hansen, counselor at COC. “We offered work experience programs at COC,” said Mr. John D. Parr, director. The work experience program involved students being placed “on the job” for several weeks instead of report- ing to COC for regular classes. Students received no pay for their work, but got practical exper- ience in their chosen field, said Mr. Parr. Mr. Dwight Chisholm, former business teacher at Arthur Hill, was director of placement at COC. Work on a co-op basis was also available for COC students.
