“Meeting the challenges which face American secondary education pre- sents opportunities for valiant serv- ice in the life of our nation: for the destiny of American democracy and the future of the American high school are forever inseparable. Living and working with two gener- ations of high school students, teach- ers and parents in one community have brought rich and lasting satis- factions. | shall always be grateful that this has been my good fortune. Mr. 1. M. Brock, A.B., M.A., prin cipal His Door Was Always Open Every once in awhile an event occurs that quiets a community and causes it to pause and reflect on past achievements. Such was the reaction at Arthur Hill on January 30th when Irl M. Brock, principal of this school for thirty-three years, announced his decision to retire in June. Mr. Brock has proved a master principal, respected throughout Michigan. Through the years of pro- gressive education with emphasis on the well-rounded student, to the present Sputnik-inspired renaissance with its message of our need of knowledge for sur- vival’s sake, Mr. Brock’s leadership has given Arthur Hill a quality that defies definition, a something in the climate of the school—the feeling that we are a family, that we think well of each other, and that Arthur Hill is the finest school in the world. His door has always been open to a student or a teacher with a problem; his decisions characterized by fairness and understanding. Born in Wayne County, Illinois, April 19, 1895, Mr. Brock attended Southern Illinois University where he was active in athletics and editor of the college yearbook; he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in 1922 and the master’s degree in 1926. Mr. Brock served in the Army Air Corps from 1917 to 1919. He was principal of an elementary school in Springfield, Illinois, before coming to Sagi- naw as principal of South School in 1925. He came to Arthur Hill in 1929. Mr. Brock’s many offices in professional and com- munity organizations include: president of the Michi- gan Association of Secondary Principals in 1940, member of the North Central Association research commission, member of Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi, honorary educational fraternities; president of the Kiwanis and Fordney Clubs, Veterans of For- eign Wars, American Legion, director of Bridgeport Country Club, member of the committee of 300 that helped develop Delta College, and a member of First Presbyterian Church. As one writer has said, “Mr. Brock is synonymous with Arthur Hill’, so might it also be said that Mr. Brock’s service here is synonymous with the school’s motto: “Achievement with Honor”. 19
