The queen and her court look radiant while being honored at the Homecoming Asse Queen Carol Reigns Over Hillites Homecoming is one of the most thrilling traditions at Arthur Hill. The homecoming activities begin with the election of twenty-two girls chosen by the student body. These candidates are then interviewed in spon- taneous conversations at an all school assembly. The following morning students vote for the three girls whom they would like to have as queen and attend- ants. When the royalty is chosen, she and her court are honored at the Homecoming Assembly. They then attend a real battle between the football teams of Flint Central and the fighting Lumberjacks of Arthur Hill. Following the game, the queen and her court are guests of honor at a most memorable home- coming dance. This year’s queen, Carol Raymond, and her court will long be remembered by students, faculty, and alumni. Tears of happiness are shed by Queen Carol and Attendant, Kathy List. 11 Theater in the round was the setting for three one-act plays presented by the sophomore, junior, and senior classes, February 28. The junior class presentation of “The Valiant” was awarded the best play. Actor Kevern Cameron and actress Jeanne Gobble received best actor and actress awards for their outstanding performances. The other plays presented were “Egad, What A Cad” by the sophomore class and “Air Tight Alibi” by the senior class. Phil Parker, Ray Grief, Kim Stemler, and Mitch Berlin add a musical note to the Boys’ S.O. Campaign. Early morning jam sessions, burlap dresses, and over-all excitement capture the halls during the S.O. Campaign. Arthur Hill by Wolfgang For an American student it is just an experience to become a Hillite. But do you know how exciting it is when you are a European student at Arthur Hill? It is more than just an experience to be thousands of miles away from home and though to feel like being home, to be far away from friends and though to have so many of them, to be German and though to do things like an American. A year can be long, but this one at Arthur Hill is far too short. Hillites, you gave me a wonderful time. Thanks to all of you. | shall never forget those halls, those games, those assemblies, and those girls, too. But this country, in Europe known as the country with unlimited possibilities, showed me its realities, too. There is a difference between the town Dortmund in the Ruhr Valley and Saginaw in the Saginaw Val- ley. It starts with the sky. Never had | seen so often a blue sky expanding over the country. Germany is famous for rain. The students are not alike, but their problems are similar, though the American youth seems to have greater personal freedom as well as the feeling of responsibility, and much more school spirit and patriotism. This school is the best one | ever saw, not because it has a nice building, and a great stadium but be- cause there are people in this school which are un- forgettable to me. n rom Germany; f Exchange students from Europe ate Wolfgang Ruhwi kel from G y By Wolfgang: Rubwinkel Audrey McNabb, Ireland, Rainer Liehmann, Germany, Gisela Elbert, Ger- : ¥ Exchange student from Dortmund, Germany many; and Hendrik Meijer, Holland. § TMNT ALU SUE iil ae - « ” “ ° . . - a « . s a . Mr. 1. M. Brock, A.B., M.A., prin cipal His Door Was Always Open Every once in awhile an event occurs that quiets a community and causes it to pause and reflect on past achievements. Such was the reaction at Arthur Hill on January 30th when Irl M. Brock, principal of this school for thirty-three years, announced his decision to retire in June. Mr. Brock has proved a master principal, respected throughout Michigan. Through the years of pro- gressive education with emphasis on the well-rounded student, to the present Sputnik-inspired renaissance with its message of our need of knowledge for sur- vival’s sake, Mr. Brock’s leadership has given Arthur Hill a quality that defies definition, a something in the climate of the school—the feeling that we are a family, that we think well of each other, and that Arthur Hill is the finest school in the world. His door has always been open to a student or a teacher with a problem; his decisions characterized by fairness and understanding. Born in Wayne County, Illinois, April 19, 1895, Mr. Brock attended Southern Illinois University where he was active in athletics and editor of the college yearbook; he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in 1922 and the master’s degree in 1926. Mr. Brock served in the Army Air Corps from 1917 to 1919. He was principal of an elementary school in Springfield, Illinois, before coming to Sagi- naw as principal of South School in 1925. He came to Arthur Hill in 1929. Mr. Brock’s many offices in professional and com- munity organizations include: president of the Michi- gan Association of Secondary Principals in 1940, member of the North Central Association research commission, member of Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi, honorary educational fraternities; president of the Kiwanis and Fordney Clubs, Veterans of For- eign Wars, American Legion, director of Bridgeport Country Club, member of the committee of 300 that helped develop Delta College, and a member of First Presbyterian Church. As one writer has said, “Mr. Brock is synonymous with Arthur Hill’, so might it also be said that Mr. Brock’s service here is synonymous with the school’s motto: “Achievement with Honor”. 19 DR. Bright designs, paint- ings, and etchings, many of them award winning, may be seen in the showcases throughout the buildings. Crafts classes concentrate upon useful objects such as ceramics and jewelry. Color and form are easily seen in the craft projects. Drawing classes, both mechanical and architec- tural, are necessary for those who are interested in architecture and engineering. Clarity, precision, and detail are stressed in these classes. The industrial arts classes, consisting of wood and metal shops, prepare boys for trade occupations while teaching them useful ways to coordinate mind and hand. Precision is of importance to students in mechanical drawing classes. articles. Equations Puzzle Math Majors The early mathematicians, Pascal, Euclid, Pythago- ras, and others, established the foundation for the study of mathematics. Through the discoveries of these men, math classes are able to Pursue their teachings. The fundamentals of geometry, algebra, and trigonometry are taught in the honors classes af a more rapid rate than that of the conventional classes. A college-bound student after his elementary training in arithmetic would enroll in algebra, where he is taught in the ways of letters and negative num- bers as well as regular numerals. Following this training he would study geometry and be instructed in lines, angles, and surfaces. Then he would resume his study of algebra and pursue the complexity of trigonometric functions. The business, refresher, vocational, and prepara- tory math classes direct the students in solving every- day problems of percentage, interest computations, retailing, etc. Li A REAR SNEE ON RE FIRST ROW: S. The study of our American heritage is emphasized in American history classes as they pay particular at- tention to national heroes and customs. World history classes travel through the ages of time from Egypt's pharoghs through England’s monarchs, discussing the changes of civilization through the centuries. Geography classes explore the structures of different nations as they watch for climatic, geographical, and geological features. Economics classes delve into the nation’s econ- omy with special attention given to the income tax. The complex system of politics coupled with local, state, and national governments highlight government classes. Soci- ology classes study habits, cultures, and customs of for- eign and familiar peoples. JoAnn Robishaw and Milo Dockham lead discussion of their American Observer in sociology class. Mr. Stewart oversees his Economics class as they review their day’s lesson. 47 Variety is the essence of English classes, variety that trains a student to express himself in any field. Does he want to write a skit for the Band Bounce, prepare a panel discussion for history class, make up a cheer for a pep meeting, or write a report of an experiment in chemistry class? The precision of ex- pression required in English class prepares the student for all these. | Often students express thoughts of real worth in beautiful language. On these two pages appear out- standing student quotations illustrated by pictures of school life. WAST RE rk to i : Hillites arriving for school on an October day may have inspired the I following quotation: “Each day the inquisitive return.”“—Tom Weber, ‘63. 1 English Mastery Proves Vital as Te Deeply absorbed in what they are writing, Elna Jameson, Virginia Pudschun, and Tom Jacob exemplify this quotation taken from a composition written for Miss Christine Webb’s eleventh grade honors English class . . . “Nothing seems more important than creating.” —Maruta Miluns, ‘63. iG RS ae rg nea ERLE ps et The English teachers suggest direction, and the student goes out on his own private research, sniffing and probing this way and that in his travels until he makes his own discoveries. Insights dawn as he reads and ponders, refines his thoughts, turns them over and over, accepts this, rejects that, and then writes. The English student begins to understand himself and his fellow man as he reads great literature. From Thoreau’s Walden and Emerson's Self-Reliance he learns independence of spirit. He feels compassion in the humor and pathos of O. Henry’s stories of the “Eour Million”, senses E. B. White’s deep patriotism and purity of writing style in One Man’s Meat; learns the sweep of human emotion from Thomas Wolfe, acceptance of life from the couch of Laotsze, and drama and vitality from the plays of Shakespeare. From these great companions some goodness must come. In All Areas A photographer catches John Hill during a reflective moment as he studies his history lesson. Co-op Students Achieve Desired Goals Ting ... zing... zing.” That is one of the many sounds that can be heard each day throughout the business education hall. It comes from the room of a typing class. These classes and the other business education classes, ranging from business mathematics to office training, train Hillites for business. Many of these students are dismissed early from school each day to go to their respective jobs at offices, stores, and banks in various parts of the city. Others have jobs on weekends, though some may enroll in these classes as an aid in taking notes or in writing term papers for college. Arthur Hill’s Student Store, which operates before school and during both lunch hours, grants experience to those who are not working outside of school and is handy for the student customer to buy notebook paper, ball point pens, book covers, and other class needs. Shirley Kietzman seems to enjoy working with the typewriter in her office training class. 51 What's next? Reporters Linda McCullen, Rosemary Schultz, Margaret Pahl, Cheryl Streb, Jacqueline Schreiner, Sally Selling ads, typing, and taking pictures are a must on every publica- tion. Cox, Jackie Rezius, Carolyn Sauvie, Ann Marie Spenser, and Dathleen Jarema eagerly look for new assignments. “The Arthur Hill News is ready for distribution to- day.” With great anticipation of what is to come, Hillites close their books and wait for the arrival of the News. A feature of each edition this year is Impressions, by German exchange student, Wolfgang Ruhwinkel, whose amusing articles fill Hillites with delight. Not to be forgotten are the club notices, Top of the Hill, editorials, sports, and any other news which is of interest. Students gain admission to the news staff after com- pleting Journalism I. Sophomores Exhibit Future Strength The 1961 football season saw the Saginaw Valley League expand to nine teams with the addition of Midland, Bay City Handy, and Flint Southwestern to the former members. With this expansion, the strength of the S.V.L. was increased from its already prominent position among the other state conferences. Our Lumberjacks, a charter mem- ber of the league, recorded a 2-6-1 season with their unyielding deter- mination, an excellent credit to our men. Junior quarterback Jim Flora (23) is following the play. 93 “OUT OF MY WAY”—Bill McMullin steadily improved and became Mr. Fowler's chief reserve. Here he tangles with Saginaw High’s all-state Ernie Thompson. HAIL DISTRICT CHAMPS Height — the tallest team in our state, depth — a bevy of capable reserves, and talent — four men averaging in double-scoring figures composed Arthur Hill’s basketball fortunes for 1962. Under the able leadership of coach Charles Fowler the cagers cap- tured a successful 12-6 season and a district champ- ionship. Throughout most of the season Arthur Hill looked like a potential powerhouse. Three heart- breaking defeats from cross-town rival, Saginaw High — the eventual state champions, and several letdown games kept the team from an unusually excellent season. Much of 1962’s talent is young, however, and peo- ple are looking for Arthur Hill to be a state title con- tender once again. OUCH !—Bay City Handy’s Don Bach (13) grimaces from a knee in the back. As members of this club, these boys work to serve their school and community. In their largest fund-raising project which is the Hi-Y-faculty basketball game, youth and experience oppose each other. The money raised through this project was contributed to the expense of the new basketball score board. Two members are chosen to attend a mock legis- lative convention. These members have a valuable experience, actually voting for senators, representa- tives, and a governor, and they also pass bills. At the close of the school year the Hi-Y president presents the Outstanding Sophomore Boy award to the boy so chosen by students and faculty. re and Y-Teens Goodlander, B. Godwin, P. Parker, J. Affiliated with the YWCA, Y-Teen members work to promote stronger friendship between people of different nationalities and races, and to bolster community services. Y-Teen members undertake numerous activities dur- ing the year. Sewing baby kimonos for the Needle- work Guild was the Y-Teens first project this year. These kimonos are distributed to various charities, such as the First Ward and Guadalupe Centers. Dec- orating the YWCA with greens during the holiday season, singing Christmas carols, as well as listening to hair stylists and other speakers compose some of the activities in the Y-Teens’ busy schedule.
