Science: The Study Of Torture Twenty-two hundred years ago in ancient Greece, Archimedes, Hippoc- rates, and Democritus devised a method to trouble teenagers forever. They called it science. Captured by the lure of curiosity, students are trapped into performing such tasks as pouring random chemi- cals together and sniffing the obnoxi- ous odors, rolling little cars across the floor, and digging around the organs of formaldahyde-ridden pigs, and into- lerably forcing memorization of oxida- tion numbers. Two periods a day, for two semes- ters kids torture themselves for learn- ing ' s sake, trying desperately to acquire the knowledge and earn their credit. But it is harder for some than for others. Typically, there are types of students. One is the mad professor. This dis- gusting, smart individual is the class pet peeve. He sits in his chair, absorbs every word of the teacher, never prac- tices or studies, passes every test with a 100 and never-endmgly asks questions like, If the exothermic reaction of hydrocarbon oxidation in living organisms were to be sup- planted by . . . Another type is the guy playing the fool. This guy doesn ' t know what is going on, and doesn ' t care either. This kid is always goofing off. He ' s the guy who blows up the chemistry lab, unwinds string all over the Physics room and dissects animals like a butcher. And then there is the rest of us, going through various stages of neu- rosis trying to pass the course; at times broiling to the point of anger, when the teacher says, You ' ll get it, or It ' s so easy! and yet, when the semester is ended, it ' s all been fun. Steve Suynn plays roller ball in Physics C ' mon Mr. May, talk English Mad scientist Danny Hodges mixes his expl sives. 20
