Phase courses update English classes A breakthrough by the English De- partment! This year the English Depart- ment offered a choice of courses. Except for freshmen, there were no structured classes geared to grade or ability. Three phases made up the program. The Phase l courses were for those stu- dents who had difficulties with basic language skills. The most popular paired courses this year were Greek and Roman Mythology and Vocabulary Development, and Black Literature and the Short Story. Twentieth Century American Writers and Modern Poetry, and Victorian Age and Nineteenth Century American Writers were offered in Phase ll courses. Phase ll was set up for those with an understand- ing of the basic language skills, who want- ed to improve them. The third phase of the program was for those who had an interest in language skills and who had a more mature under- standing. Two of the courses offered were the Novel and Creative Writing, and English Grammar and Study Skills for the College-Bound. The Phase Elective Program excited and interested teachers as well as students. Starting this year, students took a new interest in English. Three new ideas for classes next fall are animal stories, science fiction, and law and man. t 'fs r . ' t SEVERAL TECH STUDENTS enjoyed Black Literature class this year, especially Betty Adams. Tech ranked highest of city FL school Tech, the highest ranked city high school in the National Forensic League! Mrs. Alice Goodrum coaches a team of 60 members, who sacrifice their Satur- days to compete against thirty different people in three or four rounds a day in order to represent Tech in the finals. That's competition against about 40 stu- dents, and of those 40, only five students receive ribbons in their category. Of course not everyone walks away with a ribbon, but they do receive NFL points for placing in each round. Need- less to say, it takes a lot of courage and determination to continue competition against so many students on so many Sat- urdays. Apparently the students ARE determined, for of the 60 members of the Tech Speech Team, 50 have become National Forensic League members. SPEECH TEAM-FRONT ROW: Don Applegate, Mike Thomas, Kathy J.
