In his grammar school years he lived on a farm and attended a one-room country school. During high school he lived in Mt. Carroll and Clinton, Iowa. His undergraduate college years were spent at Grin- nell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where he majored in chemistry. His senior year of college was spent at the University of Wash- ington where he pledged Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. After graduation he organized an orchestra which toured the Orient. In 1924 he married Claris Hazen, a classmate at the University. They began their married life in Auburn, Washington, where he acquired the ownership of a music store in the community. Mr. and Mrs. Hartman have two sons, William and Richard, both of whom have graduated from Southern California Universities. They are both married and the senior Hartmans have four grandsons. Mr. Hart- man is an active member of the El Monte Lions Club, Presbyterian Church, and the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Hartmans long and active years of service began in 1951-52 when he took his graduate work at the University of Wash- ington and received his teaching credentials. After moving to Morton, Washington, he taught and served as the principal of the high school there. In 1939 he received his Masters Degree from the University of Southern California, and in 19-40 he accepted a position in the El Monte High School District as Director of Continuation School. In 1942 he became Director of Attendance and Child Welfare at the El Monte High School and served' in this position until 1955, when he transferred to Arroyo High School. He is completing twenty years of service for the El Monte Union High School District. During his years as Director of Attendance he has served as President and as a member of the executive board of the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare and Attendance. Mr. Hartman treasures the many opportunities he has had to serve, guide, and to help the students of the El Monte High School District. His rewards come when he sees many of the students with whom he has become acquainted take their places in the adult world as good citizens. Mr. Hartmans varied, interesting, and serviceable life will always seem to continue in activity as the first thing on the agenda upon his retirement this year is a trip around the world accompanied by his wife. His hobby is building homes and he plans to devote most of his time enjoying his hobby. He also enjoys gardening, golf, and music. We of Arroyo High School will certainly miss Mr. Hartman. He has been a friend to all the students and a great credit to the school. Even though this is his last year, his memory will linger on in the minds and spirits of all true Arroyo Knights,
