International understanding--why can we leave this only to the stubborn grown-ups? We, the youths, must take the part of it. To understand foreign countries, we have to know their customs, the history, the governmental system, the climate ... To do it, it's nice to correspond with foreigners, to travel around is also nice, to read books about the foreign countries is good, and there is AFS. To come to this country, I was surprised how bad I had felt about our own customs in Japan. For instance, to bow instead of shaking hands, to take off shoes before entering the house . . . But now, I feel very proud of these customs. This feeling may come from the longing for my mother country, but at least I like the custom to take off shoes ... as the floor is clean, we can use the space most freely. If we are proud of our own country, we can tell about it quite freely without any lying. Someone will say I know Japan, because I visited there. But, isn't it only the Geisha-House that they visited? Most travelers will stay at luxurious hotels, and will see one of the reasons that America is thought of a country of luxury. Instead of staying at hotels, we, the AFS'ers, stay at private homes and attend ordinary schools. So we can see how most of the Americans live and so we will get a much clearer impression of what Americans are like. Masaki Watanabi, AFS Student 3
