This book is the fifth edition since Arrowhead formally opened in the fall of 1956. We have tried to capture and to make vivid in your memory the friends we've made, the knowledge that we have acquired, and the activities we have taken part in. This, then, is the 1961 Warhawk, Arrowhead High School... Page 3 Page 4 I WILLIAM H. HINZE: Director of Guidance, Freshman, Senior Counselor. J. V. Assistant Coach ROBERT C. REMSTAD: Sophomore, Junior Counselor. J. V. Football Coach MINISTRATION To Principal Richard Koepke, Jr. -in whom the students at Arrowhead High School have not only a wise and capable administrator but also an understanding counsellor and friend-we, the Warhawk Staff of 1960-1961, respectfully and affectionately dedicate this book. Page 5 —-- Each year a group of young people enters high school, and each year another group - far more mature and in command of its faculties- leaves high school. The four year span between these two events en- compasses so much that to define it is almost impossible. To each person the experiences encountered are different, but all have one ex- perience in common - there is change. And so it is with the world in which you will live. For each, life will be unique; but for all of you, there will be change. It is our hope, as we send you on your way, that your experi- ences in high school will enable you to adapt readily to the changes with which you will be confronted - secure in the knowledge that, of all the things in the world, only change itself is constant. DONOVAN RICHARDS Assistant Principal The future of our democratic life depends on our faith in God and the education of our youth. I firmly believe that the present students of American high schools are the best-educated young adults in the world. The democratic educational system has no equal. It is true that professional educators and students alike must strive for constant im- provement. When you're through learning, you're through. The taxpayers of the Arrowhead district have seen the importance of educating young people. You are being provided with adequate facilities and a teaching staff of extremely high quality. Your responsibility is to reap the profits. Self- discipline and common sense along with self-evaluation will provide you with excellent tools to aid you in this oppor- tunity. The future is yours; proceed with a purpose. HARTLAND LUMBER CO. Page 7 COMMERCIAL VINCENT POLLOCK: Bookkeeping, Office Practice. Dear Classmates, We have tried to capture for you in this yearbook events that you will cherish as fond memories of A.H.S. days. As you turn the pages, you will review your accomplishments and relive the activities in which you played an important role. You will smile- or perhaps sigh- over pictures of old friends and acquaintances. Lessons, once learned, will be brought again to mind; and significance, not understood before, will become clear and permanently meaningful. I want to express my gratitude to my advisors, Mrs. Petrick and Miss Smith; to my business manager, Gary Geszvain; to my assistant editor, Gail Spicuzza; to Mr. Eugene Johnson, our on-the-spot-photo- grapher; and to all my associates for their help throughout the year. They have showed splendid cooperation in getting out this annual. Now we place it in your hands. We sincerely hope that you like the 1961 WARHAWK. The band marched in many routines and saluted the election year with Let’s Vote. ” During November the band journeyed to Watertown to play a concert with six other bands from Little Ten schools with each band playing one n ovement of the suite The Land of Wheat by Don Gill is. The Christmas season was saluted with the annual Christmas concert. The choir sang Four Old English Carols. ” while the orchestra and band included Children’s Prayer from Hansel and Grctcl and the Toy Shop” among their selections. A m.id-winter ball, sponsored by the music department, celebrated the end of examin- ations and the conclusion of the first sen, ester of the school year. The spring season opened early in March with a clinic for woodwinds and a concert by the band, orchestra, and choir with Dr. Raymond Titze of Platteville as clinician and director. March 25 was the date for the choir's singing, dancing through the pages of Victor Herbert's The Fortune Teller. It was a gay story involving a Hussar soldier, a ballet troupe, an opera company, a band of gypsies, and, of course, a love interest. The music competitions were held at Watertown with the solo and ensemble meet late in April, the state contest on May 6. and a week later the contest between the large music groups. The music contest gives every student a chance to compete against other perform- ers to see how far they have progressed toward the goal of excellence. The musical schoolyear will close with the graduation music and march into a summer season of parades and concerts in the park. IU CTI VITIES Band FIRST ROW: L. Callcnbcck, C. Becker, M. Jill is from Kenya, and she has made many students aware of Kenya's promise and problems. Now, when Kenya is mentioned, every one who has learned from Jill feels a little more personally involved. The American Field Service is the sponsering agency for the foreign student ex- change program. Starting as a volunteer ambulance service serving allied troops in both World Wars, the American Field Service found that intimate, personal contacts fostered understanding and respect among people of different nationalities. The AFS has attempted to expand the number of personal contacts between Americans and ether nationalities in order to help bring about greater friendship. The high school student exchange program began in 1954 with 51 students from 10 foreign countries and has risen to nearly 2, 000 students from about 50 foreign countries. After careful selection AFS students arrive in the United States where they live in an American home for one year and attend the local high school as a member of the senior class. These foreign exchange students have been valuable assets to the Arrowhead High School. They give personal glimpses into their countries which one cannot otherwise obtain from books or magazines. The AFS student for 1960-61 is no ex- ception to this. Another part of the AFS is the Americans Abroad Program which sends American students abroad to study or live for a time. Arrowhead is involved with this program for the first time this year. The local AFS chapter is supported by contributions from school and community organizations and from the International Fair which is held each spring. Basketball was played as an interscholastic sport by the Freshmen and Sophomores while the Juniors and Seniors put their energy into volley- ball. Points for all sports, outings, and social events were added to the scores of previous years. Therefore many awards were given to a pleasingly large number of mem- bers. The fifth and highest award, a blazer, is given to the girl gaining the highest number of points during her four years. This year's award was proudly worn by Gail Spicuzza. Our first tournament was an open singles in which Bonnie Nicholas and Jim Schmidt took top places. Next, was a doubles tournament with Gail Spicuzza and Jim Houle leading the list. After these two tournaments, the members were divided into A and B classes so that competition was at a useful level, those of the B class having the chance to advance to the A class when they had reached a sufficiently high standard. The top five or six in class A were invited to play at the West Allis Badminton Club in Milwaukee every Thrusday evening. Page 74 The tumbling team started very early in the year to work toward a demonstration at the State Teachers Convention in Milwaukee. They were a great success and later demonstrated for a Milwaukee Physical Education Teachers meeting, a University Play-Day in Madison, and also appeared on Living and Learning, a television program sponsored by the University. The standards attained by the team were excellent. The Tournament Club, for those who have won a game in an area or state tournament, continued to grow this year. Gail Spicuzza again carried off the Junior S. E. Wis- consin trophy; Bonnie Nicholas was runner up. The know- ledge these members gained at the West Allis Club under the experienced eyes of Mr. Ray Heise was invaluable to them in their tournament play. The third Thursday of each month was adopted by the board as the evening for G. A. A. outings. The first outing was to Delefield at the skating rink. It proved very suc- cessful and future plans were made for going again. Groups of club members also visited the Silver City Roller Skating Rink and they also went bowling. We shall miss his presence in the classrooms, his greeting in the corridors. We shall miss him at athletic events especially at basketball games, for basketball was John’s favorite sport. The Hartland Lakers will miss a conscientious officer, helpful and skilled in mechanics, who always gave his best and finished what- ever task he undertook. He was a loyal friend. We shall not forget him.
