USS NEW JERSEY BB62 The NEW JERSEY is a battleship of the IOWA class, commissioned in 1943. Displacing 56.000 tons, she is 887 feet long. 108 feet across the beam. Her pre- sent crew consists of 80 officers and 1556 men. The ship ' s six 16-inch guns can hurl 2700-pound projectiles on targets 20 miles away. Supplemented with twenty 5- inch guns, this is the most massive fire- power of any ship in the world. NEW JER- SEY is the only battleship in modern history to serve in three wars, having just returned from operations in Vietnam. The Navy had 23 battleships left after World War II.
