Whittier Patterns From Birth to Death Unaware of the first form Completed in his behalf, Man moves unendingly Over and under Around and through A series of patterns Until his death. Dimly traced in the half-light of dawn, Boldly outlined in the bright glare of noon, Faintly discerned in the obscure dusk of evening, These patterns chart man’s progress . Bound by the covers of this book, Somewhat hidden or drawn in detail on its pages, Are the “Patterns of Destiny.” Whether forms to be completed, Skills to be mastered, Talents to be developed, Goals to be reached, Or personages to be emulated . . . These are the ‘Patterns of Destiny.’ Contents Ty Eo: Dedication “Our destiny exercises Its influence over us Even when, as yet, We have not learned its nature; It is our future That lays down The law of our today.” 6 Frederick W. Nietzsche e 1° Dedicated Annually from the portals of Arnold High School Graduates have moved silently, Yet unendingly Across the plains of indecision, Through the mills of immediate occupation, Or within the walls of further preparation To take their ultimate stance In the ranks of society. Among them Are doctors, lawyers, nurses, and teachers; Preachers, priests, technicians, and diplomats; Laborers, beauticians, scientists, and housewives. No prophet, sage, or seer Can wholly predict Or unerringly tabulate The final world destruction or edification To be derived from this ever lengthening parade. For many years at Arnold High School Boys and girls Have been marking forms, Mastering skills, Developing talents, Reaching goals, And emulating personages. It is to these graduates of Arnold High School That this book is dedicated. Whatever vocation, profession, or career followed, All of Arnold’s graduates Receive this honor. wad ARS aan! pe hted Fi ‘ Siaate tl Juiny te THERA i THALA HE i} i ae HL {HHH} SL TEN Se a SSS | ‘ Na . a im 4 “oS 35 S Renae PT Se , ‘f So Minas Son. Why all the fuss? About cramming, and studying, and cheating—who us? They said, “You're promoted; freshmen no more.” We gazed out the window, looked down at the floor. With all these new teachers, giving homework stacked high, We kinda wished we were back in old junior high. “There's no fooling around; no f’s, and’s, or but’s.” “Don’t do this!” “Don’t do that!”, but gee, “Don’t do what?” “Watch out for the seniors and juniors as well; Stay away from the principal”, we heard them all tell. We had nine years behind us, only three more to go; Just why was this year moving so slow ? But some how it worked out, and the days did pass by. Boy, what a beginning in old senior high! Then we were juniors; a smooth part we played— We bossed the rookies; seniors we obeyed. Who could ever forget all that this year took in? Like our '64 football team. (Why did Montour have to win?) And selling at the games was always fun, Though there never were enough jobs for everyone. Se eee , 7” Se 3 ieee ee, eS — {p= MARCIA A. Memories We were met with some laughter, and many a tear, Big dates, and small dates, all in one year. | And last but not least, came our prom—what a day! | Our girls looked so precious. Our boys led the way. Our prom decorations caught all as they gazed At murals and paintings; the crowd we amazed. At last we were seniors; we held our heads high. | We made it our best year; then said goodbye. ! Goodbye, once-feared principal, who made us to see Men and women of merit, we all ought to be. Goodbye, loyal teachers, you've taught us a lot. : The treasures you've given us could never be bought. . Goodbye, noisy hallways, slight glances, and tests. Goodbye, all the games that proved we were best. And goodbye, Alma Mater, in our hearts you will stay. You've given us something we can never repay. Not only did they fail to obtain a winning season, but this s | marked the end of the highly successful coaching career of the Lion’s head coach Frank Martin. With only two regular players returning from last year's A.I.C. championship team this year’s squad was gre utly lacking exper- ience. But this did not stop the Lions who were game and played many exciting ball games in which they just fell short of win ning. Throughout the season the players and coaches displayed a ‘never say die’ attitude ort in the back, Gee The “Brain” Half Of The Game J.V. Bob Malecki The 1965-66 basketball season brought with it many highlights for the fans of the Lion five. For the first time since the Lions.entered the strong Section I competition were they able to come through with a winning season, After roaring through their eight exhibition games undefeated, the Lions let it be known that they had come into their own and were rated as a strong contender for the section title. But in the first league game they suffered a defeat at the hands of the Har-Brack Tigers. However, they came bouncing back and won four of the six remaining games on the first half of their schedule. Playing spastically the rest of the season, the Lions acquired their best record in six years. One of the bright spots of the season was the home game against Ford City. It was in the highly con- tested game that co-captain Dan Barbiaux amassed 34 points for a new school record. Consequently, through the fine shooting and all-around play of the Arnold five they were able to claim the first victory over a Ford City team since the 1959 season. With another year of experience under the belt for 11 of his versatile players, the Lions were expected to improve. But how do you improve on a section championship team with a 10-1 record? The Lions were determined that they could do so, and after finishing the first half of their schedule undefeated, they were established as the team to beat in section cight. But each attempt to do so by the opponents only further proved the Lions’ supremacy. The second half of the season resembled the first, until the Lions suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of the Springdale Dynamos. However, the Lions came back and won their three remaining games. Thus the Arnold nine successfully de- fended their section title and began planning for the W.P.I.A.L. playoff games, Their plans must have been well laid. Greensburg, North Hills, and Gateway fell in rapid succession before the booming bats and stellar defensive play of the Lions. | Thus the stage was set for the big game of the year, the W.P.I.A.L. championship, against the Beaver Falls Tigers. The Lions brought a successful season to a glorious end by easily trouncing the Tigers 11-1. Only one question remains to be answered. How do you improve on a W.P.1.A.L. Championship? With Coach Jim Marino close by our side, We came back to our valley, bursting with pride. At the “House of Thrills” on the sixteenth of June We sent the Fallsmen to their doom. Of “Big Jim Suskiewich” we'd heard tales And after the first our faces had paled. They went ahead in the first when “Suskie” scored But they found the Lions could not be ignored. For Coach had put “Fanny” on the mound And we knew to victory we were bound. The Lions went ahead 5 to 1 in the third To disprove the tales of “Suskie” we'd heard. Baroni was walked; then a single by “Maz”; “Fanny's” single scored Alan for happier days. A bobble, a low pitch helped our John to score. Joe walked, “Chick” bunted, “Fanny” scored one more. 14 EB ee eis . dee Coyle safe on an error of a very nervous Tiger Allowed two more runs and the score rose even higher. The 4th opened with Alan getting hit by a ball; “Maz” singled, “Fanny” tripled—for “'Suskie” that's all! He left the mound behind 8 to 1 But our roaring Lions still were not done. They hit hard off Gray, in relief of poor ‘Suskie.” The Tigers tried hard, but our boys were too husky. They scored 3 more runs to make sure of the prize; They brought home the trophy—we're proud of our guys. It was a day of frustration for the Beaver Falls nine, But the Arnold High Lions were all feeling fine. So Suskie” was beaten, despite all the stories And Arnold fans showered their heroes with glories. Yes, our boys were all heroes—they never gave in— “Maz,” “Chick,” and Joe all helped with the win And “our boy Fanny was bursting with pride, “I'm never afraid with my coach by my side! ].
