Four girls drop in to look at the toys, and to learn that Mr Grumpy is not excited over the approach of Christmas. Three citizens come to the shop, hoping they can persuade Mr Grumpy to help them in arranging a fine Christmas for the under-privileged of the town. Before Mr. Grumpy has given his answer, three women arrive, and add their pleadings to the men's asserting that the time has come to talk less and work more. Mr. Grumpy, considers their plan foolish and declines to join them Disappointed, they leave the shop. At the curtain rises for Act II, Mr Grumpy is asleep, but is awakened by the drum-beating and marching of the toys. After talking with them, he is convinced that they have real value. The Christmas Angel, tells him he would be much happier if he had more good will in his heart. Thinking over ail that he has seen and heard, he then goes to sleep. On awakening (Act III), Mr. Grumpy is confused, but he is continuing to refer to things that the toys have sup- posedly said to him He remembers the words of the Christmas Angel. He is touched when the janitors give him a Christmas present, and decides that he, is going to do something to give joy, at Christmas. He sends for those to whom he has been rude, and says that he is glad to be friends with everybody. He tells of his strange dream, and says that in his mind's eye, he can still see all of the toys that taught him such a valuable lesson The FINALE finds everybody looking for- ward to a joyous Christmas.
