From its beginning in the early 1900’s, to the present, the history of Arnett Schools, and even more important the history of the classes, has been varied and colorful. Due to lack of space, every class could not be covered in this short history. Our appreciation and thanks to the High School FT A for the use of the History of Arnett School book they have compiled over the past few years. BACK ROW: Miss Stewart, Mrs. Sneary. Miss Northup, Mrs. Thomas. Mrs. Yarbrough. FRONT ROW: Mr. Carrier. Mr. Wilton. Mr. Yarbrough. High School Teachers - 1929. THE BEGINNING In the year of 1901 the School District No. 27 was organized and the description is as follows: Beginning at a point where Range Line Between Ranges 24 and 25 intersect the North line of Day County; thence East 3 miles; thence South to the half section corner between sections 15 and 16: thence West 3 miles; thence North to a point of beginning.'' This was the first beginning of schools here and no more information can be found in records at the County Court House. When Oklahoma bacame a State in 1907, and when Day County was renamed Ellis County, the school district number was changed from No. 27 to No. 70. 34 1919-1920 The Senior Class of 1920 consisted of Misses Edith and Edna Shaffer, twin sisters, and the only gradu- ates. The commencement exercises were held in the Christian Church on Thursday evening May 20, 1920. The invocation was given by Rev. Duckworth, after which the chorus sang the Anvil Chorus.” A reading was given by Bernice Vandeventer, and instrumental solo by Naomi Crossman, two more songs by the chorus and the address was given by Rev. McCarrol. E. O. Arnote was school Superintendent and Velma Thomas was the Principal. The old school building was located West of town, where the road turned to Gage, this later was replaced by the Arnett Creamery. 1920-1921 The Amett High School was not very large at this time, probably forty-five or fifty enrolled in all four classes. There were only two teachers in the High School and four in the Elementary School. Mr. D. C. Mosshart was the superintendent and one of the high school teachers. Miss Frawley was the other teacher. Vera Duckworth relates this story about the class of 1921: I remember one incident that was funny at the time, but as I look back I can see that it could have been very disasterous. Elmer Wilhite, a sophomore, was sitting in the front seat on a row directly in front of the teacher's desk. The occupied seats had the ink wells in them, but the seat behind him was vacant. Our desks were of the old type with an ink well in the upper right hand comer of the desk. Henry Branstet- ter was sitting across the aisle opposite this vacant seat on one side and another boy was sitting across the aisle on the other side of the vacant seat. All of the waste paper accumulated by these three boys was stuffed into this vacant desk. One morning Miss Frawley stepped out of the room, and Elmer being a show off” and occupying a good position in the room, began to entertain everyone. He lit a match, turned around in his seat and was wildly waving it around over his head, when we heard footsteps that didn’t sound like Miss Frawley’s. Elmer immediately stuck the lighted match into the desk behind him and was studying very hard when Mr. Mosshart walked into the room. We were all holding our breath won- dering what would happen. Luckily, Miss Frawley came into the room at this time and Mr. Mosshart walked back into his own room. We were all dis- tracted when the smoke began to roll out of the hole in the desk and one of the girls screamed FIRE and by that time the fire was burning furiously. I don’t know how it kept from setting Elmer's clothing afire, but it didn't. A number of brave” boys rushed over to that desk to put out the fire and then each of them claimed the honor of putting it out. The Amett High School published its first school paper during this school year, and its name was The Prairie Dog. A special thanks to Vera Duckworth for this story. 35 1925-1926 The class of 1926 was an all girl group with two of the class members married before graduation. Mar- tha Shelton Heinsohn and Thelma Mingus Stout. The commencement exercises were held May 20 in the courtroom with T. R. Blaine giving the address. Anna Bamber Carrier relates the following informa- tion about the class of 1926: The Senior Play that year was Bashful Mr. Bobbs and with admission 25d for children, 35d for adults, and 50 f for seats in the courtroom. We were quite excited to take in $95.00 that night (February 12, 1926). That was the most that had ever been taken in at a school play up to that time. During our Senior year the class as a whole presented one Chapel Program and then each member was responsible for an individual program during the year. Nineteen twenty-six was the first year Arnett High ever had a Junior-Senior Banquet. It was held in the northeast room upstairs in the old school building.' ’ Class members were: Martha Shelton Heinsohn, Thelma Mingus Stout, Anna Bamber Carrier, Grace Shaffer Mitchell, Ruby Richards Wieden, Reva Rich- ards Branstetter, and Grace Sneary Woods. Special thanks to Anna Bamber Carrier for the information concerning the class of 1926. Midget Team 1915 e j 36 Jay and Jerry Knowles 1928-1929 CLASS POEM In our class, we have twenty-two seniors, The largest A. H. S. ever had But we hope that each year will increase it with all that is good, but not bad. Dear old high school, we say, dear old class For the parting hour is drawing nigh, But we must let no sad tears fall, As we meet to say good-bye. It is hard indeed to part with friends, Whom we love and cherish dear. But though far apart, we will often dream. Of those friends of yester-years. All the lessons that we have gained, In these four short, but happy years. Still will shine across our pahts To dispell all doubts and fears. So from A. H. S. we part today But full of pleasure, hope, and joy, And many memories we'll keep with us, That years can never destroy. To our classmates we wish success, To the faculty and end to strife, And for ourselves we will start in the busy whirl Of that higher school called life. By: Helen Sibley Irby Freeman Clarence Knaus Russell Charlton Vernon Word Curward Bunyard Wesley Lane 37 1929-1930 The following information was supplied by Elizabeth Bayless Rouse. There were many country schools yet, that hadn't consolidated so when the students were ready to go to high school, the ones from over Harmon way, south and west of town came to Arnett to school. They rented rooms in homes or some worked for their room and board. Also some were allowed to drive back and forth. 1 particularly remember the blizzards. If the bus was late or couldn't make it at all, we still had to have excuses from the office, and each teacher had to sign them, which took up a lot of time. Mr. Woo- druff had Glenn Thompson, who wrote similar to him, sit at his desk and sign our excuses, so he could get on with our history lesson. Our school buses were homemade out of wooden sid- ing and window glass. They had a bench on each side and a double one down the middle and we sat facing each other. In the winter we always had cold feet. If we were lucky a good friend would sit across from us, and we’d sit on each other's feet to keep warm. One blizzard kept school closed for two weeks, which was a happy bonus for all of us, espe- cially the rabbit hunters. One incident concerning our school that I’ll never forget happened on the Clint Shaffer corner. The bus was hit by a car and overturned. The top split open and children and lunches spilled out all over every- where. One enterprising young lad was out collect- ing goodies, apples, oranges, etc., that had rolled out from the lunches. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt, just a few bruises that got a little sore. Special thanks to Elizabeth Bayless Rouse for her information on the class of 1930. 1933-1934 Wendall Bayless provided the following information about the class of 1934. The records show that 33 Seniors marched down the aisles to receive diplomas on that memorable occa- sion. It was the depression, as you recall, and the graduation exercises verified it - we wore no caps or gowns. Yet we were proud, and a little confused, for possibly no more than six of the class attempted the next hurdle of higher learning, and the rest went their separate ways, each hoping theirs was the right step forward. Miss Northrup was teaching the fifth and sixth grade when the Rocky Slope children said good-bye to the country school. The school bus ride, the large school, and going to school in the city was just a lit- tle overwhelming. Forrest Dowler's friendly smile and arm around my shoulder was mighty comforting on that first day. This may have been the year the atomic bomb was ushered in, at least the explosion set off when Wallace Bradley bit down on a large cap jarred everyone, including the teacher. Wallace’s head stayed on, but I have reasons to believe his seat was lifted rather high a little while later. ” Special thanks to Wendall Bayless for these stories about the class of 1934. 38 1934-1935 The Seniors of 1935 tell these stories: Our sixth year we rated a room all to ourselves, THE DOGHOUSE, away from everybody. That year we found that there was more than one use for a waste paper can, just sit a boy in and push him in as far as you can and he will stay. Of course if his hair is red and you put him behind the teacher's desk so only the top of his head shows, you have a mild dis- turbance among the remaining students. It took three men to get Billy out of that seat. The year we were freshmen we were initiated by 1936-1937 Basketball Girls Who are these girls? Couldn't you guess? They're the Basketball Players From A.H.S. There's Ida Klein The captain and guard She's always in there And really works hard. A Swell guard is Katherine The Cooprider girl She's also co-captain Watch her give'em a whirl. There's Lela Mae Miller Our Trusty She plays like lightning For all that’s in her. Our little side center Flossie Pratt She plays all around them And is quick as a cat. There is Peggy Robinson A forward, Ah, man She sinks those goals As fast as she can. having to wear our clothes backward for a week, for the girls it wasn't too bad, the boys thought it sorta bad, but it did make it easy for them to scratch their backs. On Friday the fun really began, they fed us candy with soap in it, and ran us through the BELT LINE, they used magazines instead of belts, but it still hurt. We had to pull Wilson Baldwin's Model T Ford around the square with the brake on. Harley Wayland broke away from the tow line and nobody in school could catch him. On a warm spring day in 1935 with only a few dust clouds overhead 25 very happy seniors said a fond good-bye to Arnett High. Next is Georgia Koons A forward and how, She is quick as lightning And sinks ’em wow. Dorothy Shelton A guard tall and stout She’s a life saver When the others foul out. Our substitute forward Irwanna Stuckey At making a goal Sometimes she is lucky. Roxanna Rucker A forward indeed She helps us out When we're in need. Sub guard and center Edred West She does very well When put to the test. Winning the games Is all very well But in Sportsmanship They do excell. 39 40 SENIOR POEM 1943 We'll tell you all about us A jolly lot are we, The seniors of Arnett High School The class of 43”. Glamourous Sibyl McCollogh Of her we like to brag And you should see the guys That she's got in the bag.” The sweetest girl in our class Is Bivian West you know May her smile be her umbrella Wherever she may go. The next girl on the list Is Edna Lucille Hall The best guard we ever had In playing basketball. Our chauffeur is Orville Kibbe He makes all corners round He should get a ticket for speeding Or flying too close to the ground. Bill White is our Romeo With girl friends at his will, But this time it's the draft board Who has a date with Bill. Wanda Bullard is the village queen She’d stir anyone’s emotions But now she’s married, boys! So don’t get any notions. The credit for our conduct We give to Mr. Carrier That sponsored all our parties And the more there were, the merrier. Wayne Stiles is our Jitterbug, According to information, He always gets the Jitters In any congregation. Now we've told you all about us. Good things we tried to mention, We hope that you have enjoyed it, For that has been our intention. Lucille Love, Merilatt 41 1945-1946 The Seniors of 1946 tell these stories: Our senior year began with lightened outlooks for the war that had seemed so interminable had ended and as the boys came marching home, wedding bells rang simultaneously with school bells for at least half the girls in our class. ” Our class panel took its place in the halls of AHS and we felt so proud of ourselves - but graduation hadn't yet arrived. On a slumber party we girls (now! now! there were no boys!) swiped a watermelon and dumped it in the horse tank to cool and went out on Highway 283 where we thumbed to town in the back of someone's pickup. We found the town locked up and sleeping and we were stranded. We went to the telephone office where we called Leroy Kestler, who came and took us back to our watermelon.'' A Halloween escapade brought chagrin to two boys and several girls who lost Hazel Shelton and I in the De Bolt Cemetary (they told us this was a short cut to Gage). Although they got search lights to look, their efforts were in vain. How could they have been oth- erwise when we were hiking full speed across a wheat field for town! As we passed the school, Mr. Hunter flashed a light on us, our only threat of exposure. We rushed home and to bed for a full nights sleep to face those poor kids at school the next day. Mrs. Mann, whose class we attended first, joined in the preschool banter in this episode.'' Our class plans for roasting chickens over an open fire in Mosers pasture went slightly aray when the only available fuel was cow chips. Most of our chicken was taken home raw. Someone made off with our ice cream and we prayed that whoever ate it would have indigestion. Eventually we retrieved the ice cream and our prayers were answered.'' A Senior trip was planned and executed for a tour of Oklahoma touching interesting and historical spots, and so the class of 1946 launched forth for their var- ied lives and careers and another class stepped for- ward to take their place. Special thanks to the Seniors of 1946 for these sto- ries. 1950-1951 Special thanks to Bernice Stuckey for the information about the class of 1951. The year 1951 was upon us. We had a new skipper this year, Mr. Creech. We began to prepare for the great outer world, and again we felt small and then again were very proud of ourselves. We found our class roll to number 23. We were hoping we could become an asset to our Alma Mater and it to us. At our graduation exercises, our class introduced the parent-flower ceremony which I believe is still practiced. Not too many of our class went on to col- lege, but can boast of many occupations - teachers, home-demonstration agents, petroleum company employees, construction workers, secretaries, den- tal assistants, telegraph supervisors, farmers, and last but not least, all of us have the important role of mother and dad. Thanks go to Bernice Stuckey for providing this information about the class of 1951. 1956-1957 The Seniors of 1957 provided this information about their class. Carolyn Dearing was crowned the 1956-57 basket- ball queen this year. Her escort was Larry Branstetter and the entire team were her attendents. This year we were on the receiving end of the Jun- ior-Senior banquet and Prom. Although it was rain- ing and muddy we enjoyed a nice evening of 'Down Mexico Way.' The time has flown by so fast that now the long awaited week was here. Senior night they had fun remembering the past and Sandra Price gave the class history; Walter Rupprecht, the class poem; Donald Jacks, the class will and Tawanda Habekott, the prophecy. May 23, 1957, was the big day for all. Again there were mixed feelings as the class had their last time together. Many were looking forward to all the times ahead, while others were thinking of the past twelve years they had spent together. Many realized that some of the ones there they might never see again as everyone went their own way. Carolyn Dearing and Zelma Young were co-valedictorians and Marcia Holland was salutatorian. And so another class, the one of 1957, graduated from Amett High School. There were twenty-three members of this class that said good-bye to each other and to the school, but most had a few tears in their eyes as they walked out. ” Thanks to the Seniors of 1957 for this information. He never had to fear That he wouldn't pass. Richard Brown and Ronnie Littau Were the athletic type, But some of their pranks Caused the Coach to gripe. Patsy Bullard and Margaret Baldwin Brought the honors to our throne, Received the titles, Miss Cinderella, ” And Basketball Queen, All their very own. Sharon Bullard and Anita Woods, Each have diamond rings. They will receive their MRS degree Early in the spring. John Carey and Mirl Fielder Were the pranksters in our group. Now we see Carolyn Ashpaugh, And Connie Mackey Hoping that someday they'll know Just what they're going to do. Here's Buddy Sutton and Kenneth Barker Both doing rather fine. Working at the Gas Station, Trying hard to make a dime. Bernice Clearwater and Donna Boyd Now come into view. Both of them quiet and shy All twelve years through. Vonna Wieden and Rita Smith Are very smart, it seems. But from looking at their report cards. It's only in their dreams. Ronald Branstetter and Larry Jacks, Weren’t putting on the style, When two sophomores flashed them Such charming smiles. Pat Compton and LaWanda Fain Are next in line. Hoping they’ll find someone Who'll treat them really fine. Now here's Darline Suthers, Who's really got it made, And Sharon Horner, and Barbara Marlin Wondering if they'll make the grade. 44 1962-1963 Delbert Barker Bonnie Cadwell Craig Chesnui Loydetta Collar JoAnn Creed Dwight Daniels Pat Davis Dyonna Dickson Beverly Hanan Harvey Jacks Karen Longhofcr Jon Noyes Patsy Patterson Jan Roper Wanda Stevens Jack Stout Donald Stuckey Bill Word Rollin West 1966-1967 Special thanks to the Seniors of 1967 for the inform- ation about their class. Our class had a time with their play, 'My Mother Is A Freshman,' but it came off well. The Junior-Senior prom had the theme of 'The Cinderella Ball.’ The prom turned out to be a real nice prom. Of course, we seniors weren't worried about the prom. The only thing we had to worry about was starting out early the next morning on the Senior trip, which was a ball. More things happened on that trip than a dog has fleas. First of all, Steve Jacks got lost and everyone was frantic. Finally, we found him in his room curled up on the kitchen sink. Then 'dear little Sherry Word' got lost and was found riding around with two boys from Tenkiller. (Which is a big NO- NO.) We managed to tear up three Hondas. You could just about bet that you'd find us every night swim- ming at midnight in freezing weather. The manager just knew that everyone was crazy! ’' Most of the girls learned to play pool. One girl tried to come home with the purple '4 ball' because she claimed that it just took her eye. That was out of the question.'' Two boys each stole a glass from the dining area and got caught by the manager. They knew it was wrong, but they always were the most mischievous boys in the class. Thanks to the Seniors of 1967 for these stories. 45 ARNETT HIGH SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENTS AND PRINCIPALS 1908-1909 Mr. A. Squire; Superintendent 1910- 1911 Mr. M. E.
