KV. A. ORTNIEYEH Superintendent Noah VVebster defines education as follows: The process or manner of training youth for their station in life. Spencer once said, To prepare us for complete living is the function which education has to dischargef, The philosophy of the Armstrong School has embodied the thoughts expressed by Webster and Spencer. To prepare a young person to live well and richly throughout his or her lifetime is to develop the mental capacities, encourage normal growth of the physical body, instill moral values, and satisfy the yearning for Cod. Not all of the responsibility for this rests with the school. Other agencies such as the home, church and community have a vital responsibility also. The heart of the school is the classroom. Here the growing mind is first of all instructed in the tools of learning: reading, writing and numbers. As these skills are mastered, the assimilation of further knowledge is made possible. Thus, an increasing store of knowledge in the fields of literature and the languages, history, mathematics, natural and physical science, and vocational subjects unfold before the growing mind. The more natural skill each individual student has to grasp and accumulate the facts available in this vast store of knowledge and the more he uses the natural skill with which he is endowed, the more knowledge he will accumulate. However, knowledge alone is not enough. Social, moral and spiritual values must be developed also if a well-rounded personality is to emerge. Classroom activity alone would tend to develop a one-sided personality. To avoid this and to relieve the monotony of routine. we have the extra-curricular activities within the school and the assistance of other organizations outside the school. It is the duty and privilege of every student to take full advantage of all these opportunities offered, to discover his or her talents and abilities, and to prepare for a useful place in society where a rich and successful life can be lived. lt is my hope that the Armstrong School can aid each of its students to attain such a successful development. 4
