Our Year of Discovery INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS--Participants on the program of installation were (top photo, left to right) the Reverend O. D. Brown, speaker; William Harris, who presided; and Assistant Principal Amold Henderson, who also spoke. Officers of the class, in the usual order, are Everett El, Esther White, Thomas Capers, William Harris, Frances Snead, Carolyn Harris, Carole Gibson, and Janie Jones. They are shown participating in the candlelighting ceremony which marked the installation. The year 1959-1960 was a year of discovery for the seniors of Armstrong High School. We discovered the joy of being seniors and of being looked up to by underclassmen. We discovered the responsibilities of being leaders. We dis- covered the rigors of debating in English 7 and of problem-solving in Trig. We discovered longer hours of study, harder work, but the satisfaction which comes when one realizes that a long-sought goal is in sight. Leadership Leadership brought with it many pleasant moments as well as many responsibilities. Above, student leaders gather on the school steps for a chat with Principal George Peterson, Jr. Left to right are Wesley Harris, president of Student Council; Maxine Tucker, editor of THE SPIRIT ; Mr. Peterson SECOND ROW, William Harris, Senior Class President; Eugene Mitchell, ranking member of the Cadet Corps; and Frances Snead, president of Junior Red Cross and Senior Class vice-presideut. Our greatest discovery, perhaps, in the area of scholarship was that a little learning is a dangerous thing.” Seniors elected to the National Honor Society included Maudetna Scales, Janie Jones, Marian Bey, Earnest Davis, Milton Grantham, Andrea Page, Iris Thomas, James Arrington, Malalia Stephens, Wesley Harris, and William Harris. Scholarship Competition Seven senior girls vied for the title of Miss Armstrong.” They were Janie Jones, Marian Bey, Esther White, Goldie White, Andrew Page, Frances Snead, and Beverly Whitaker. Contestants were required to have a B average, good attendance record, and excellent citizenship traits. iin tactic. Esther White won the coveted title of Miss Armstrong, and the privilege of reigning over the Armstrong- Walker half-time activities, Victo ry The Big Game = Armstrong — Walker Game Miss Armstrong receives flowers from Principal George Peterson, Jr. during half-time activities. Esther's escort, Eugene Mitchell, looks on. Her attendants are (left.) Andrea Page, who is escorted by Roger Higgs, and Frances Snead, escorted by Stuart Mitchell. In the photos, Andrea and Frances are riding around the field in convertibles. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BIG DAY--Miss Armstrong and her attendants leave the field after the Crowning. Members of the Cadet Corps serve as honor guard. In an exciting moment, Stanley Brown (No. 26) carries the ball for Armstrong while George Davis (No. 51) comes to aid him. none mt ess % ty lh ste ee i i. i Perfect Attendance Seniors who discovered a justifiable pride in their four-year perfect attendance record were (top photo), Corine Walker, a nd Wesley Harris; (top, right) Gloria Hutchinson; and lower, left, William Harris and Maudetna Scales. 10 Pastel Drawing by Winston Rollinson aculty The Principal Seniors! Make the most of this year with its exciting challenges, dramatic choices, ardent idealism and fervent friendships. Your present reactions to the world about you are striking and wonderful indi- cations of your approaching maturity. Whether you go on to honorable and creative adulthood depends on you. Make no mistake, this is your year of discovery; there will never be another year quite like it. While parents and teachers are still with you and sympathetic guidance is available, make your greatest discovery--find out who you really are, Find out what you honestly want from life. Explore your possibilities, sincerely face your strengths and weaknesses; then, on the basis of your discoveries, plan your future. This is your year of discovery and it can be your year of decision. It can be the year that started you on the pathway to self-realization, adult responsibility, and worthy citizenship. God grant that you discover soon your true and highest self. God grant that you use your gifts for His glory, your own development, and service to mankind. 12 Mrs. E. A. Green The Assistant Principals Arnold Henderson 13 ay bvA P.
