Little did we know that soon after our overwhelming home- coming victory, we’d be facing some REAL challenges—record- breaking sub-zero temperatures and enough snow to cool the jets of the hardiest Eskimo! But we plowed right through all those snow days without too many complaints or cold toes, eagerly anticipating the summer hum of mosquitoes and air conditioners! Band Chorus Enjoy Their Achievements! Armstrong’s band and chorus were active and acclaimed under the first-year leadership of Miss Susan Gerling. Early in the year a welcomed visit from the Chanute Air Force Jazz Band enlivened the students’ day and really shook the rafters in the new gym! Everyone also enjoyed a visit to see Annie at the Assembly Hall. The busy pace for both band and chorus included concerts here and at the grade schools, playing at home games, and several music contests in which many ATHS’ers received firsts. Robert Herndon received the privilege of attending the All-State gathering at Springfield, an honor awarded to 1100 out of 5000 students throughout Illinois. A super year! Fun and hard work combine for a pleasant year in music! Swing into Spring ’82! 52 The 1982 spring concert brought back old memories. This year Armstrong’s band and chorus created a swing choir and enthusiastically performed music and dance from the Fifties. Kendra Smiley generously offered her time and talent to choreograph and conduct the swing choir while Susan Gerling accompa- nied them at the piano. There were also many solo and ensemble performances, such as that of Tina Carter pictured at the right, from students who received a first or second placing at contests. And the band played while the chorus sang for the rest of the evening’s entertainment—a great way to break Old Man Winter’s monoto- nous sights and sounds! Bandleader and chorus in action! In addition to several exciting assemblies, the Student Council sponsored its week of special activities in the spring. Included this year were a student teacher day, elections, a crimi- nologist lecture, punk rock fun, and the annual class competition. Well done, council members! Fish and Hooker (Freymiller and Herndon), took to the stage singing, dancing and dramatizing in “Vaudeville’s My Home.” Broke and stranded in a small town, the two troupers planned to swindle the townspeople and ended up with a production they hadn’t quite expected! With the piano accompaniment of Rita Graumenz and choreographic belp of Kendra Smiley, the ATHS thespians created two exciting evenings of musical and comic entertainment. BRAVO!! The country theme was set off by the rustic decorations created by Ranae Rademacher, Dale Wilken, Jolie, and Vonda Pflugmacher. After a response by Gary Freymiller and invocation by John Smiley, a huge meal was enjoyed. Vonda and Bryan Severs were the next hits of the evening as they read the hilarious prophecy, fol- lowed by Gary’s and Jim Carley's readings of the seniors’ wacky wills. The Night Riders Band set the crowd rocking, and the time was enjoyed by all.
