It is this: Every man 1 meet is my master in some point, and in that I learn of him. —Emerson Where should the scholar live? In solitude, or in society? In the green stillness of the country, where he can hear the heart of Nature beat, or in the dark, gray town, where he can hear and feel the throbbing heart of man? —Longfellow He (the scholar) must be a solitary, laborious, modest, and charitable soul. He must embrace solitude as a bride That he may become acquainted with his thoughts. —Emerson To talk in public, to think in solitude, to read and to hear, to inquire and to answer inquiries, is the business of a scholar. —Samuel Johnson “Learn while you’re young,” he often said, “There is much to enjoy, down here below; Life for the living, and rest for the dead!” Said the jolly old pedagogue, long ago. -George Arnold Life’s ail getting and giving. I’ve only myself to give. What shall I do for a living? I’ve only one life to live. End it? I’ll not find another. Spend it? But how shall I best? Sure the wise plan is to live like a man And Luck may look after the rest! 88 —Rudyard Kipling 9 i , £ r ' .V . r • „ ♦. ,• - - a'' ' s .£ •. . jr •• •: «r y v ■% v 'r-■ v:.f - •■ v.
