Homecoming 1969 Branded! 58 59 Yearbook Staff The yearbook is a senior class project with Mrs. Bauer acting as advisor. The staff is composed of juniors and seniors, one of the seniors serving as editor. At the beginning of the year the editor, the advisor, and a few other staff members attend a meeting at the University of Illinois where they see slides on preparing yearbooks. Choosing the yearbook cover and drawing the lay-out for the pages are onlv a few jobs the staff must complete. Newspaper Staff Our monthly edition of the TROJAN was started through the efforts of senior Terry James. School news, movie reviews, club reports, and an honors page are a few of the articles in the paper. Baby stays drier in Pampers. 63 Yes??? Peek-a-boo! Lei me in! Spring Concert— Cumberland Fair Vic Irvin singing a solo in the Cumberland “Take your sweater,” says Nancy Ahlf to Lynn Blackford. Fair. “I don’t know. I’m just givin’ the speech! Dave Henderson gives a demonstrative speech in Mrs. Sale’s 3rd hour speech class. Each student also participates in debates, story-telling, group discussions, oral interpretations, and plays. Driver Education Mr. Hulfachor believes in “safety first”. His driver education class consists of actual driving preceded by classroom study. The students drive in surrounding towns to get experience behind the wheel and to become safe drivers. Ed Cler and Stan Wolfe discuss an important event after civics class. The juniors learn of our breakaway from England in Ameri- can History. Social Studies Far-a-way places are made known to the students in Mrs. Tate’s World History class. 66 Science Biology class learns to identify different trees and plants as part of their course. The Science Department at ATHS gives the students a better understanding of the world around them and provides a background for college work. Filmstrips aid the students in their understanding of chemistry. In physics, students work with an oscilliscope. Physical Education Classes In this basketball game speed is important as Terry James moves in to stop Dave Shafer. Work on the balance beam improves gracefullness and coordination: Carol Ackerman demonstrates a front scale while Connie Ludwig does a knee scale. Ray, Dennis, and Larry measure boards for use in their woodworking projects. Mr. Stagen shows Denny Hittlet and friend how to mark a board for cutting. Industrial Arts The students of the industrial arts classes are taught how to draw blueprints, handle tools properly, and experiment in wood and metal working. The finished products are shown at the annual spring open house. 69 Home Ec Alice and Jackie Wise ice a cake while Mrs. Lamb supervises. The purpose of the home economics classes is to teach future housewives the proper home- making techniques. Ag Paul Wise demonstrates welding to the rest of the class. Mr. Burkybile’s ag classes give the students practical ex- perience in welding and farming. 70 Guidance Guidance is available to all students at ATHS. Mr. McCollem provides information concerning college choices, entrance qualifications, and represents stu- dents when problems occur. Mr. McCollem discusses college with junior. Bill Knight. Gary Coffing finds out what to expect on ACT tests. 71 Math 72 Mr. Stuby shows some enterprising young students how to use a slide rule in Algebra 1. Mr. Stuby also teaches Algebra II.Ge- ometry, and Trigonometry while Mrs. Susan Johns teaches Algebra I and General Math. Larry Helfrich and Mike Camp are involved in the art of chalk drawing. Students learn to appreciate art and develop their talents in Mrs. Bakken’s 7th hour art class. Jill Johnson and Donna Putnam work on their art projects while Mrs. Bakken supervises. Business The business courses at Armstrong in- clude typing, shorthand, general busi- ness, and office practice. Students acquire the background they will need for jobs as well as personal use in these classes taught by Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Bauer. First hour typing class works diligently while Mrs. Roberts supervises. Karen King uses the Norelco transcribing machine which is part of the office practice class. 74 English Department The English classes offer the students here at Armstrong a better understanding of the world around them. Learning to communicate with others and enjoy literature is also a part of the English program. ABtlLW Mrs. Sale teaches Terry Cler how to use THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE. Junior English learns a “whale” of a lot while studying MOBY DICK. Good Morning World! Sophomores awaken to the World of English. 75 76 Spanish Spanish II listens to a tape of their dialogue. First and second year Spanish students learn to speak and under- stand the Spanish language. Spanish 111 and IV gives the students a chance to increase their vocabulary and read Spanish literature. Music The Music Department provided entertainment for the FHA Banquet and produced a spring con- cert called The Cumberland Fair. The band was directed by Mrs. McKnight. and the chorus by Mrs. Caldwell.
