ARLINGTON STATE COLLEGE 1949 -196 With the year 1949 carne another name change for the school, as the largest state-supported junior college in the Southwest became kr.o-fx: as Arlington State College. Emphasis in the two-year junior col- lege was placed on agriculture. horne economics, business and secretarial ad- ministration,and pre-engineering. By 1953, the number of departments had narrowed to five: agriculture, arts and sciences, business administration. engineering and fine arts. ROTC came 1 to the campus in 1956: all agriculture courses were discontinued in 19575. In 1959 the school was elevated to senior college status. At that time the college became divided into two de- partmentalized schools, the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering, and two divisions, one in business administration and the other a technical institute. The college embarked in 1964 upon the largest expansion program in the history of ASC. The three million dol- lar program included the construction of new buildings and parking lots. In December of 1964, students at ASC learned of a proposed move by Texas A8:M University to incorporate all four schools within its system into one closely l-cnit super university. The proposal included changing the name of ASC to Texas A8zM at Arlington. Opposition to the plan unified the student body throughout the year. Arlington State College's efforts to separate itself from the Texas A8cM University system reached a successful conclusion on Friday.
