A25 s..r EDWARD EIVIMETT RANKIN FATHER OF ARLINGTON COLLEGE ..--, l iiL:-W r ian-53 5i5 I ,X , 'I xx 'L LEE HAMMOND ARLINGTON COLLEGE 1895 - 1902 In the spring of 1895, Edward Em- mett Rankin, the Father of Arlington College, suggested that the citizens of the community of Arlington open a private college in the towng he pro- posed the names of Lee M. Hammond and William M. Trimble for co-prin- cipals. Later that year, on one block of land donated by the Ditto and Col- lins Land Company, the one-building school opened its doors. At opening, the college had a fac- ulty of six and from 75 to 100 students. The curriculum covered elementary through high school grades, with courses in mathematics, grammar, Latin, and the 'natural sciences. In 1901, due to lack of funds, Arlington College ceased to operate in full scale. WILLIAM TRIMBLE

Professor Robinson, UT Arlington's Pioneer ' The 1969-70 Reveille staff is proud to dedicate this year's annual to Duncan Robinson, member of the university's staff for more than 40 years. He was a member of Sigma Tau Delta, honorary English fraternity, Sigma Delta Chi, honorary lour- nalism fraternity and listed in Who's Who in Ameri- can College and Universities. Mr. Robinson received his B.A. degree in English from North Texas Teacher's Co-llege in Denton in 1928. He joined the North Texas Junior Agricultural College faculty as an instructor in public speaking and freshman English. He added a laboratory course using slides for improving the writing skills of stu- dents needing help in freshman English. Prof. Robinson received his master's degree from Southern Methodist University in 1934 and later spent summer sessions at the University of Colorado and UT Austin working- toward a doctorate. He was ap- pointed professor of English at North Te-xas Agri- cultural College in 1938. He continued as director of information for the college as well as faculty ad- visor for the student newspaper, a position he held for 20 years. He was named chairman of the English Department in 1954 after the death of W. A. Ransom. Prof. Robinson has contributed much to the UT Arlington curriculum. He developed the first Survey of English Literature course in 1932, added a South- western Literature junior level course, and a Mark Twain senior level course in 1959. lvlr. Robinson is the author of several articles on Southwe-stern his- tory and personalities. His book, Texas Three Legged Willie, published by the Texas Historical Association in 1948, added to the prestige of a growing school. my 'NW .. it 4-1 Professor Robinson is always willing to listen to a students problems Mr. Robinson was one of three from UTA to be nominated for the Piper Professor Award this year. Although his 16 years able service to the univer- sity as department chairman of English will terminate at the end of the current summer session, his great- est contribution has come in the classroom. Mr. Rob- inson's wit, understanding, knowledge of the mean- ing of literature and consistent interest in the indi- vidual are the characteristics he has imprinted upon the lives of thousands of students. lt is as an edu- cator of young men and women that he has made his mark at UT Arlington. it 5 A an ?
