Greek Impact Un Campus Life Felt UT Arlington entered its first full year of National Greek fraternity and sorority activi- ties in the fall of 1968. Phi Gamma Delta CFijisJ and Phi Delta Theta both received their charters from their respective national organizations, thus affiliat- ing all six fraternities with national groups. San Souci sorority became Alpha Chi Omegag Avolonte, the oldest sorority on campus, became Zeta Tau Alpha and Les Choisies is currently pledging Delta Delta Delta. Phi Mu and Delta Zeta both came on campus in 1967. En Ami is still a local or- ganization. Sororities pledged over 50 coeds in the fall and 104 in the spring. Fraternities took 129 men in the fall and 130 in spring rush. Over 600 men went through the two rush periods, although some were not eligible to pledge. This year marked the last time deferred rush will be held by Panhellenic and Inter- fraternity Councils. Forum A ttracts Political L eaders Efforts to get then-Presidential candidate Richard Nixon to appear at the Student Ac- tivities sponsored Presidential Forum proved futile, but forum spokesman Kathi Bomar did present an impressive group of political speak- ers during the October sessions. Among those speaking were house minority leader Gerald Ford of Michigan CRep.Jg David Markg Bob Priceg Texas Senator Ralph Yar- boroughg Republican gubernatorial candidate Paul Eggersg news commentator Sander Van- ocur and U. S. Congressman Jim Wright and Jim Collins. Also Doug DeCluitt, Republican candidate for lieutenant governor and Ben Barnes, Democratic candidate for the same office. Forum organizers had hoped to get Nixon and California Governor Ronald Reagan. Reagan was unable to come, however, because of a meeting of the Board of Regents of the California University system. Nixon was un- able to speak because of an engagement in Dallas. Government students take notes during Presi- dential Forum speeches and question and answer sessions. Congressman Jim Wright of Ft. Tilly, Alpha Chi Omega president Marie Simmons sifts through flour with other sorority heads for a silver spoon with her sorority's name on it. Competition Messy ln Winter Ulvmpies Licorice ice cream flowed thick and eggs cracked as UT Arlington's sorroity coeds showed their athletic prowess in the Phi Delta Theta Winter Olympics in December. Members of the six womens' groups com- peted in tricycle and wagon chariot races, tossed eggs, tested their abilities with the shot and javelin and fed each other melted black ice cream-blindfolded. Delta Zeta placed first in the Olympics. Alpha Chi Omega was -second, followed by Zeta Tau Alpha. Trophies were awarded at a dance given by the Phi Delts for sorority members and their dates.
