'M L anguage Instruction ln New Facilities UT Arlington's Foreign Language Depart- ment began its degree program in 1959 with only French, German, Latin, and Spanish be- ing taught. Latin has since been dropped from the cur- riculum. Russian was added in 1961, Portu- guese in 1967, and Japanese in 1968, In ad- dition to the six languages, linguistics is also taught. All modern language courses have as their aims: C15 comprehension, 125 speaking, C35 reading, C45 writing, and 153 an under- standing of the life and the culture of the people using the language. The foreign language department, headed by Virgil Poulter, has a staff of 26. All stu- dents taking a first or second semester foreign language are required to spend two hours a Week in lab. The language lab can play as many as 21 different tapes at one time. Norman Whitlock, lab director, is presently conducting an experimental Spanish course which adds the visual method of teaching by employing slides and movies. Forum A ttracts Political L eaders Efforts to get then-Presidential candidate Richard Nixon to appear at the Student Ac- tivities sponsored Presidential Forum proved futile, but forum spokesman Kathi Bomar did present an impressive group of political speak- ers during the October sessions. Among those speaking were house minority leader Gerald Ford of Michigan CRep.Jg David Markg Bob Priceg Texas Senator Ralph Yar- boroughg Republican gubernatorial candidate Paul Eggersg news commentator Sander Van- ocur and U. S. Congressman Jim Wright and Jim Collins. Also Doug DeCluitt, Republican candidate for lieutenant governor and Ben Barnes, Democratic candidate for the same office. Forum organizers had hoped to get Nixon and California Governor Ronald Reagan. Reagan was unable to come, however, because of a meeting of the Board of Regents of the California University system. Nixon was un- able to speak because of an engagement in Dallas. Government students take notes during Presi- dential Forum speeches and question and answer sessions. Congressman Jim Wright of Ft. Worth fDem.l discusses his prefer- ences for Hubert Humphrey at Forum. Texas Senator Ralph Yarborough K Dem. J drives home point by using example from Newsweek magazine during pre-election Presidential Forum.
