The Rebels' spirited entry onto the Abilene field. Arlington State College Arlington, Texas Volume 48 The year 1964-1965 was marked, as usual. by continual expansion in physical pltmt. enrollment. faculty and student achieixements. But by far the most memorable event of the school pear :cas the birth of an element heretofore only faintly ziisible in a student body of only 1.000 on- campus residents and some 10,000 commuting students-school spirit. In December of 1964, Arlington State College zcas accredited by the Southern .-lsociation of Colleges and Schools. This longeawaited recognition climaxed a period of phenomenal growth and progress which began in 1959, when ASC became a senior college. Also in December, students learned of a proposed more by T eras .-18:11 fniiersitp' to incor- porate all four schools in the A4511 System irzto one closely knit super uniz'ersity. The proposal included changing the name of ASC to Texas .4811 at Arlington. Opposition to the plan was the year's most important single factor in unity ing the student body. Even though such events as a reneu-al of football riralry between ASC and Southern .Uethc-dist University in Dallas after a 20-year lapse had fanned spirit to a pitch higher than it had reached in ASC's senior college days. the name-change proposal brought the student body into an emotional camaraderie r10t felt since .-ISC :con the Junior Rose Botcl game at Pasadena. California, in 1957.
