Seniors March With Pomp And Circumstance Jay Wheelock, having received his high school diploma, realizes that he has taken an important step along the pathway to greater heights. New alumnae, gleeful graduates, Barbara Swanson, Carol Tock, Lynn Weber, Lois Perz, and Karen Drewes shout farewell to old Arlington. Strains of Pomp and Circumstance filling the air, and the gym overflowing with expectation could only be one thing, Graduation- The footsteps of us all will echo through the hall and disappear. Thursday night with the final chords of the organ another class at Arlington became alumni. As the footsteps moved off in the distance, the graduates carried with them mixed emotions. This was the beginning of a very different life. After working together as part of a class for four years each individual was now free to choose his own course. Friendships would be split and new ones made as the class broke up to go to schools and jobs across the entire country. Memories, however, were foremost in the mind of every senior. Just being in the gym had brought back the thrill of a hard-won basketball game, the excitement of a partic- ularly enthusiastic pep session, and the glamour of the Christmas Ball. The familiar faces all around had recalled experiences both good and bad. Classes might be remembered as very difficult or lots of fun, but nothing could leave an impression like the hours of homework. That trying piece of writing, the term paper, would always be a vivid horror. During their four years, seniors also saw the school undergo changes. Teachers had gone to teach at Prospect, and for two years Arlington was less than a four-class school. With this pleasant reflecting was mixed the irony of the thought that as freshmen the seniors had looked envi- ously at the graduating seniors. The seniors now hoped they would be remembered after their footsteps had faded away. 29
