Activities Service-that could certainly be her motto. The number -of hours she had devoted to school musical programs proved she had been of service, but music was her favorite activity, so she hadn't minded the time. After all, what were activities for, but to take part in, to serve in, and to enjoy? She had learned that rewarding experiences were often the result of par- ticipation in extra-curricular activities. The thing she had liked most about activities she had been in was the friendliness of the kids. It was fun to get together with others who shared her ideas and interests. And then, it was interesting to' plan group projects and services, too. She liked musicg she enjoyed listening to it and singing it, but it was even more fun to play it. So she had become more and more involved in putting in time for the music department. It certainly didn't 6 seem like work to her, she got a feeling of happiness out of doing something worthwhile and enjoyable. Service takes -on many forms. She was able to find time for other things from painting posters to selling, student directories. Working with fellow students in school activities presented many new opportunities for friendships and for expression of ideas. Activities pro- vided added interest and a pleasant diversion from day-time classes. - ' Yes, she knew the advantages and the profits of taking part. It benefited the student as well as the club. She felt happy, and even a little proud, to know that she had done her best in service of her school.

Sociabilit It was here at last. The prom, with all its magical and happy specialnessg was tonight. She swirled to meet him in the rustle of chiffon, and he couldn't help noticing how attractive she looked. gif gl M iw She thought of how hectic the last week had been. Concentration was so hard to come by when she had the prom to think about. And she had been so busy getting ready. From choosing her formal to the last minute de- tails of her hair, she had been in a wonderful whirl. His weeks had been full too. Choosing a corsage, getting a new suit, and a hair cut-yes he had been busy too. He hoped she would like the corsage. Would she notice that he had washed and waxed the car? Was his tie on right? It had taken him a long time to de- cide which one to wear. He had almost been late. Well, this was that all-important night. She pinned on her corsage and he adjusted his tie nervously. Then their eyes met and they smiled happily at each other. This was the perfect night for two to enjoy together. She smiled a little to herself. She could remem- ber how nervous she had been three weeks ago. She was almost sure that he was on the verge of asking her to the prom but every time she managed to steer the conversation around to it, he had gotten nervous and changed the subject. Then he had asked her when she was least expecting it. Boy, he could remember how nervous he had been about asking her! He was sure she would say no, but he managed to work up courage, and she accepted him.

thletics He looked at the quarterback pass that scored the winning touchdown, at the varsity cager ready to spring into action with a jump shot, at the pitcher throwing a beautiful curve. He sighed and closed the sports mag- azine. Someday, he thought, someday, I'll be like one of those fellows. That was a long time ago. He had just been a kid then. Sports had been all glory to him, nothing but ad-- miration and cheers. Well, that played a part in it too, but there was more behind athletics than that. Sports meant many things to different people. It meant hot dogs and hoarse throats to the fans, and aching muscles and trying to whip up enthusiasm for the cheer- leaders. To him it meant other things. It meant bumps, bruises, satisfaction. It was kind of a nebulous, fuzzy satisfaction. He really couldn't explain it. Nothing else gave him the feeling of achievement that winning a game did. And nothing could beat that closeness of the team working together. That made him feel proud to be a part of the cheers and boos and the victories and the losses. It was great. He'd gained a lot from athletics. He'd improved his co-ordination and build and learned how to get along with others. That was something athletics taught you the hard way. If you couldnit get along with your teammates, the team work necessary to winning ,just wouldn't be there. ' He'd found that personal gain lost its importance, and the glow of satisfaction for team accomplishment became the goal whenever an athlete became a great. Well, he really wasn't a great athlete, he knew that only too well, but he still got that glow. Well, he had fulfilled that dream. He was now a quarterback, a basketball guard, and a pitcher for the Arlington Cardinals. It had taken a lot of work, a lot of time and a lot of patience. It was worth it. He had a personal satisfaction of doing something really worth- while. He had learned the meaning of the words, re- sponsibility, teamwork, and leadership. He was proud of his achievements and grateful for the things taught him. as-Mwrm -as W-vm ' '
