The building, a familiar plaee dur- ing the aeademie year, looked almost foreboding as he walked toward it. lle breathed a sign of regret that the summer was gone. Shifting the books in his arms, he realized that he wasn't aeeustomed to earrying them yet. He foresaw the long winter nights when he would earry these same volumes home to puzzle over their eontents. This year, he thought, he was going to work for better grades. As he entered the building, familiar things began. to present themselves: last year's elassrooms, his old locker, the picture that had hung in the hall ever sinee the building had been eonstrueted. The long erowded halls and the ehatter of passing stu- dents made him feel at ease. He hoard a familiar voiee and turned around. all i, Joe. llow was your summer? . . .N He stepped out into the darkening day and walked briskly along, taking deep breaths of the erisp fall air. Il e felt good as he thought of his pro- gress in school. The first two weeks were behind him, and he knew that this year was going to be easy. For onee he was getting his work in on time. He oven, had time to wateh TV after he had finish- ed his homework. Smelling the burning leaves, he broke into a run . . . Ile looked around at the tense. pallid fares of his fellow sufferers and then up at the eloelf. Its grotesque hands stood out from its blank. star- ing faee. ln just a few minutes they would be free. all of them. Slowly the seconds ticked away. lt was stuffy in the room. Outside the snow was falling-softly. gently. It was eold, but the air was elear. and he eould breathe-if he were out there. I0 llis mind wandered . . . This morning at twelve fifteen he had deeided that eron a photographie mind would not save him and that he should rel y on instinet alone. Ringing with a sharp, grating sound, the bell startled him, and he looked up anxiously. Relief swept through the erowd as it surged toward the door. His elassmates changed and beeame earefree and happy as they left the room. Exams were over! H o drew his eoat tighter about him as he slowly seuffed through the dirty leaves left from last fall. llliserably he meditated on how his parents had reacted to the unsatisfactory progress report they had reeeived yesterday, The homework was so hard this year, and he had so mueh of it. He never had time to do anything extra. As his feet moved automatically forward.. he dreamed of the time last fall when he had thought sehool was going to be easy this year, and then after a sudden shiver his mind returned to the present. and he trudged mis- erably onward . . . The fly buzzed nearer and nearer, and the teacher droned on. It was a warm and very beau- tiful day. Une by one his elassmates began to daydream. Coneentrating took great effort, even though he knew he should listen. lt was hard to keep his eyes open-zz: . . . Exams, exams, exams, and then they were over and sehool was out. The tight spring inside him slowly unwound as he shuffled through the papers seattered by vacation-bound students. Three golden months stretehed before him - months dedieated to nothing but good times and com plete relaxation.
