ARLINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT REFIUISCENCES By C. R. Wagner Very few of the students now attending our school have any idea of the stlge through which our school has traveled to reach its present statue, It is for their benefit that this little sketch is given. For many years the township was the school unit. There were eight separate and distinct school districts which were under the jurisdiction of a local Board of Directors consisting of three members elected at a special school election of the legal voters of each of these districts. These eight local boards were under the jurisdiction of the Township Board of Education, consisting of a Clerk and a member from each of the eight districts. This Township Board erected all school buildings, determined district boundaries, etc. Some fifty years ago the Centralized school made its appearance in northeast ern Ohio, and later on in central Ohio. Northwestern Ohio was a little slow in adopting this type of school, but in thc interim they made a very thorough study of its advantages and disadvantages. Let it be said, once and forever, and without reservation, that the one room school of our fathers' and grandfathers' day served their generation well. Many broadminded men and women who were the real builders of our country received ele- mentary education in those schools. But rapidly changing conditions increased de- mands for advanced education of the masses. Better roads and conveyances, .Along with a decrease in number of scholars attending rural schools, made changes nec- essary. It was conceded by those who were foremost in advocating the Centralized school in our midst that public sentiment must be educated in its merits. To create public sentiment favorable to such change such persons as Vernon Reigle, State Supt. of Schools, Dr. L. S. Woods of Rawson, and others who were familiar with the Centralized school idea were brought to our village. Although there was be easily discerned that the majority of our bring the Centralized school to our midst. some opposition at first, it could people favored such change as would The old frame school building Centralization was voted upon and erected under Emergency legislation L. Davis, Pres., Harry Bibler, Vice was condemned by State authorities in 1922 . carried and the present school building was in 1923. The Board members in 1923 were Carl Pres., Martin Hosafros, John Beagle and Arnie Reigle. N. D. Stein, Clerk. Thos. McLaughlin, Lima, Ohio, Architect and Alge Bros., Findlay, Contractors. The cost of the building alone was Se6,ooo. Land , building, heating, plumbing and other equipment brought the total cost to Sl20,000 The original territory consisted of sixteen square miles in Madison Twp. At pre- sent the territory has been extended to fifty-six square miles, taking in all of Madison Township, a part of Eagle, Van Buren, and Jackson Townships. The total valuation of the present district is approximately S3,5oo,ooo. It is a first grade high school employing eleven full time teachers while six full time teachers are employed in the grades. We now have a very creditable Home Ec- onomics and Agricultural department and music is receiving careful consideration. The present Board of Education consists of Glenn Newman, Pres., Charles Orwick, Lester Fink, Mrs. Cora Beach and Mrs, Thelma Line. It is true of our school as of all other centralized schools that in its be- ginning there wgg :some opposition but that opposition has, we are happy to say, practically vanished. Our school today is supported by the entire community. We feel reasonably proud of our school and the work it is doing for our youth. We can point with pride to our school building and grounds as the most beautiful spot in the community, A spring never rises higher than its source and a school is a sure index to the community and its citizens. The building, equipment, and teachers are at handy the results will be in proportion as the students and parents will it to be. The with a profound belief in God and a moral rectitude.
