ARLINGTON-26 CARROLLTON-O Arlington’s Colts ventured to Carrollton for the opening game of the 1949 season on Sept- ember 9. With seven returning lettcrmen on the squad, Arlington took the lead in the second quarter on a flashing 55 yard run by fullback Gunn, and from this point on, it was definitely Arlington’s ball game. Immediately after the third quarter started, Glasgow passed 49 yards to Pope who ran the remaining 20 for the second tally. Tnc next score came on a sustained drive which ended when Gunn crashed over from the 6 yard line. The final score came in the fourth period when Larry Davault intercepted a pass and ran 30 yards to paydirt. ARLINGTON-26 NOCONA-6 Facing a very powerful team from Nocona which defeated the Colts in 1949 hy one point, it was sweet revenge for the Colts as they scalp- ed the Indians 26 6 before a very large crowd in Arlington. The ponies scored first after recovering a fumble on Nocona's 25 yard line. After receiving the kickoff, the Indians scored almost immediate- ly to make the score 6-6. After recovering an- other fumble on Nocona’s 20, Gunn made the final 5 yards to leave the Colts ahead 12-6 at the half. Stevenson racked up his second touchdown of the night by taking an aerial from Glasgow and jaunting the remaining 40 yards for the marker. It was Stevenson again who scored in the fourth period from the 5 after successive line plays had taken the ball to that point. MANAGERS Bob Cooper Stewart Niles ARUNGTON-20 PLEASANT GROVE-6 Arlington made it three in a row as they counted three touchdowns to one against the Bobcats from Pleasant Grove. After a scoreless first quarter the Colts came bade to score on an 80 yard drive, the last 12 yards of which were covered by a Glasgow-to- Popc pass-play. In the third quarter the Bobcats drove to the Colt 24 before the strong Arlington line held. At this point Marshall took a pitchout and gallop- ed 76 yards for our second score. C. field, the Colts put on a movie finish in the last minute of play to gain a 13-13 tie with the highly favored Bowie Jack- rabbits. The only score in the first half was by Bowie early in the second quarter when Bloom crashed over from the 1 and made the conversion good. In the middle of the third quarter the Jackrabbits scored once more on a line plunge, but the kick was blocked. The Colts broke into the scoring column when Fred Cook took a 38 yard pass from Glasgow. Marshall missed the point. With the crowd gaping from the side- line and with only one minute left to play, Arlington took the ball from their own one foot line, and after two pass- es and one ground play, Gunn finally kicked the point to tie the game for the Colts. The Mesquite team threatened several times but the Colts' forward wall held and never allowed a score. The only serious threat by the Colts came in the fourth stanza, but the ball was lost on downs at the 2 yard line. The first score came in the second quarter when the Colts took advantage of a fumble by Diamond Hill, and quickly moved the ball to the 2 yard line where Gunn plunged over. Almost immediately after the half, the Eagles tied the score on a pass play that carried to the ponies 2 yard line. Pearson smashed over from there. Arlington sewed the ball game up in the fourth period when a partially blocked Eagle kick went out on their own 17 yard line. From this point Marshall took the ball 3 successive ARLINGTON-20 ITASCA-6 In a non-conference tilt at Itasca the Colts put away their 5 b victory against 2 tics, by de- feating the Wampuscats 20 6. After a slow start, the Colts finally got roll- ing in the second period after taking a partially blocked kick on Itasca’s 14 yard line and moving it down to the 2 where Gunn plunged over. Early in the third quarter, Arlington scored their second touchdown on a 65 yard jaunt around end by Bob Stevenson. Itasca scored on a pass from the Pony 9 after their line play had clicked to that point. The final tally came after a 20 yard run by Stevenson carried to the 1. Marshall crashed over. ARLINGTON-21 HANDLEY-0 For two years AHS had suffered last minute defeats at the hands of the Greyhounds, and this, the greatest team in Arlington’s history, was out for blood in the 21-0 massacre of the ’’dogs”. It was the second quarter before we finally got rolling, and after driving 60 yards, Gunn plowed the last 6 yards and then converted to make the score 7-0- In the final period, almost the identical thing took place with Gunn again carrying and kicking the point to make the score 14-0. The last Colt score came late in the fourth period when Mar- shall scampered 40 yards, with nearly every Greyhound getting a finger on him before he reached paydirt. Gunn kicked again to end the rally at 21-0. ARLINGTON-3 4 TERRELL-14 The Homecoming game was to match the Colts with an over-rated Terrell eleven, which had only two defeats to mar their record. Arlington got off to a quick start and at the end of the first quarter the Colts were leading 34 0. The second team then relieved the start- ers, and though they did not score themselves, they held the Tigers to 14 points. ARLINGTON-35 BIRDVILLE-U In the deciding game for the district 11-A championship, the Arlington Colts banged out a 35 14 victory over Birdville’s Buffaloes. It was the first time in 10 years an Arlington team had won a district title. The Colts scored first on a brilliant 45 yard jaunt by Rusty Gunn. Gunn scored again from the 12 yard line after runs by Marshall and Stevenson had 'moved the ball to that point. Birdvillc then scored on a 71 yard drive, with Lusk going over. It was Gunn again as he crash- ed over from the 8 to make the score 21 7 at the half. The fourth Arlington touchdown was set up when Pope took a 39 yard pass from Glasgow. Gunn scored after taking the ball 7 straight times for the last 15 yards. It was Birdvillc again as they put on a 76 yard drive with Neid- holt carrying the last 15. The final tally came late in the fourth period after penalties had taken the ball to Buff's 1 yard line. Gunn plung- ed over to a climax a 34 point scoring spree. Slecth kicked the extra point. ARLINGTON-6 GARLAND-6 After winning district for the first time in 10 years, the Colts ventured to Garland for the Bi- District clash between two fine teams. The first score of the game was for Garland. Compton scampered 40 yards for the Owls only marker. Tith minutes to play in the second period the Colts knotted the count with Marshall and Gunn alternating and taking the ball down to the Owl 9 yard line. Marshall scored from there, but the kick was blocked and Garland won the game on penetrations, 4 3. In the first year in ten to win the 11A District Championship, the Colt eleven placed 6 men on the 11A All-District first team and 3 men on the second team. Charles Marshall, Rusty Gunn, Eugene Pope, Marvin Wilson, Tom Herndon, and Don Goodwin were the men selected for the mythical squad. Marshall kept A.H.S. hearts pounding harder all season with his kicking ability and outstanding broken field running. Gunn’s strong defensive play and smashing line plunges were responsible for his receiving the Vandergriff Award. Pope earned his position with brill- iant defensive end play and beauti- ful pass catches. Herndon and Goodwin at tackles and Wilson at guard formed an experienced for- ward wall which was a big factor in A.H.S. victories. Herndon’s valuable blocking won the Maguire Award. 1950 Basketball Squad A” Davault, Marshall, Norman, McIntosh, Glasgow, Pope, Ekholm, Roberts, Gunn, Levy, Crider, Eddleman.
