This is the song of the river. From the far-off northern mountains, Land of Mohawk and of Huron, Come the waters of the Hudson, Mighty River of our valley. Hear it now, the rising chorus, Harmony of past and present. Slowly northward comes the chanting Of Dutch sailors on the Half Moong Rythmic chants of ancient homelands, Lands they love beyond the sea. Louder now the song of searching Searching for the Northwest 'Passage, Past Weehawken and Poughkeepsie, Past the mountains of the Kaatskills, From the land of Sleepy Hollow To the distant lakes and headlands. Now a different theme commences, Voices of the ancient settlers. They themselves are long departed, But their names they leave behind them ln their cities, Peekskill, Beekman, In their children, Kathryn, Pieter. And the simple Lowland chorus Is amplified by new migration, By Palatine and Huguenot, Celt and Scot and Anglo-Saxon. Slowly now a strong crescendo, Pulsing, measured, meets the ear, Counterpoint in minor cadence, Dissonance of changing customs, Rumbling of the modern factories, Hissing of the smoking fires, Pounding of the wheels and hammers, Till at last the notes are blended And the orchestration finished. Triumphant now the river's chorus, Symphony of jubilation, Symbolizes well the glory And the history of our land. -R.D.N
