An evening program allowed more adults to attend. During the week the rain poured but it didn’t dampen the homecoming spirit. Students participated in activities such as class volleyball, lip sync, powder puff football, and tug-o’-war. Students had a chance to dress up as teachers, wear jerseys, caps and shades, and clashing clothes. The A-GI volleyball team overcame the Montgomery Redbirds winning three out of five games on Thursday evening to start a winning spirit. Another new feature was that students were allowed to decorate floats on Friday morning. The style of float changed to a decorated pick-up because of the unavailability of a hay wagon. On Friday afternoon there was a pep rally in the gym with a parade following. The Sibley East Bengals met the Le Sueur Giants with a crowning victory of 40-22. A dance follow- ed featuring a DJ with pop and rock music. 1. Pat Connolly was MC for the coronation ceremony on Tuesday evening and the pep rally on Friday afternoon. 2. The football players float along in the parade on Friday afternoon. 7. The Preppy-Massacre Band featuring Lori Pioske, Becky Thiesfeld, Stacy Alsleben, Stacy Meyers, and Dodi Barflcnecht came back as the returning champions from Lip-Sync 1985. 8. King Dan Weinand and Queen Kelli Kleist take their places on the throne after the coronation Tuesday evening. Homecoming-7 Bengals Claw Their Way to Section III B Title From the sweaty, hot summer practices to the freezing, cold game at Byron, the Arlington-Green Isle and Henderson High Schools en- joyed their first season of football together. Wtih hard work, deter- mination, and team spirit the Bengals brought home an 8-4 record. This year the Bengals started a winning tradition by going on to win the region title and participating in the first round of the state play- offs. They were plagued with injuries at home games, but they always managed to win in their black jerseys. As the saying went in school, they always came “Back in Black.” From the decorated locker rooms to the bizarre pep fests, they all had school spirit. 8 1. Because of low numbers in both A-GI and Henderson, the teams paired under a two-year contract. The junior high teams had paired the previuos two years. Henderson added thirteen football players to the roster of 40, to make one nice sized team. The home games were scheduled for this season; two were played in Arlington and one in Henderson. The pairing of teams also gave Sibley-East an advantage over other teams in the Minnesota River Conference. The team started only juniors and seniors. These players had a good con- ference record and also took the team through Section III playoffs to a championship that gave them a birth in the state playoffs this year. Coach Baker said, “We never would have gone this far if A- GI and Henderson wouldn’t have combined.” Two of the more memorable games were against Gaylord- Winthrop and Le Center. Sibley East started out the season with a big win over its long time rival Gaylord-Winthrop. Sibley East dominated the game with excellent passing and running. The Le Center game started the Section III playoff. The entire game was a duel with Sibley East the victor by one point. The Sibley East Bengals are looking forward to another good season next year. Bcngals-l I Girls Show Teamwork Dedication, determination, and teamwork were on- ly a few of the reasons the A-GI volleyball team finished the conference in third place and had a respectable record of 8-6. The team consisted of six seniors, five juniors, and three sophomores. The team was coached by Mr. Don Sauter. Numerous hours of hard work was the key to making their team the best it could be. Brenda Herbst and Karen Thoele were selected as All-Conference players and Mary Eibs was named as Honorable Mention. It’s harsh reality, the rising cost of gas, insurance, clothes, and future schooling causes them to seek new outlets for cash. This experience gives them good ideas for sell- ing magazines in the annual junior class magazine drive. The money from the fund goes toward the prom and next years graduation. The cooks at A-GI worked very hard to prepare and provide the students with nutritional meals every day. Stdents get a wide variety with the choices of salat bar or hot lunch. The janiteurs deserve a lot of appreciation for all they did to keep our school looking good. They work- ed long hours after everbody else had gone home. The office personal at A-GI often dealt with the minor needs of the entire student body. The bus drivers put in extra hours to take students to extracurricular activities and were often very pa- tient with noisy kids and changing weather conditions. All in all they are part of a great team. 1. Cheryl Magers: Green Isle Office. 2. Phyllis Kube: Secretary, Joyce Solomonson: Secretary, Doris Meyer: Fiscal Affairs. 3. Brings Technology to Education This was the first year A-GI used technical equip- ment as a means of education. Students from A-GI, Gaylord, Gibbon, and Winthrop were able to take classes through an interactive television system that linked the schools together. The classes offered in A- GI were: college english composition, Spanish I and II, shorthand, drama, humanities, advanced accoun- ting, and honors math. This year only two teachers from A-GI were involved in the program: Mrs. Judy Scott taught Spanish I and II, and Mr. Chris Moore taught drama and humanities. Students feel the system to be advantageous because there were more classes available and they had an opportunity to meet people from different schools. One disadvantage felt by the students was the lack of teacher assistance. Though still experimental, the system is predicted to be successful and expand A-GI’s curriculum fur- ther in the future. 60 — Interactive T.V. 1. Mrs. Kathryn Morton 2. Mr. Edward Warweg 3. The girls ended their season with six wins and fourteen losses, but this record doesn’t show the hard work and dedication they showed throughout the year. 1. Varsity: Front Row: Manager Barb Kemp. Dave Hultgren was also a state entrant. He finished the season with a 7-5-1 record. He had been out most of the season because of a football injury. His matches were challenging; it was not always easy but Dave came out as a winner because he tried. To be a good wrestler takes a great deal of dedication, practice, and determination. There's always something to do: pictures to take, copy to write, pictures to sell, money to col- lect, ads to sell, theme pages to correlate, deadlines to meet, and this year, the computer to learn. The computer was added to make typing and printing of the yearbook more efficient. Editors Marianne Famiok and Anne Scott along with advisor, Mrs. Mary Hulgren, spent time this summer attending special workshops to become acquainted with the program. New yearbook staffers worked hard on pages to meet deadlines. They found they had to look at their school and classmates in a little different perspective, watching for good pictures and making copy and layout that would reflect the history of the 1986-87 school year and also interest the students. Marianne Famiok spent many hours typing copy on the computer. Yearbook Staff: Front Row: Anita Meyer, Marianne Famiok, Anne Scott, Cheri Bethke, Laurelie Urch, Mrs. Mary Hultgren. I flew to the country I worked and prepared to go to for almost a year and I was a bit curious about the whole matter. Now, after almost a years stay here in Arlington 1 recognize that very decision to become an ex- change student was right. I really enjoyed my stay especially because I stayed with the Gary Hultgren family, who made my stay one of the best times of my life. Dave involved me in many activities, for example football. This was quite an experience for me and I enjoyed the team spirit although I had a tough time handling the football. After football followed the basketball season, where I desperately tried to improve my power-move. All in all 1 had a very good time in all these sports. I will never forget my stay here. All people I met were all very helpful and contributed to my feeling that this was (or is) a second home for me. Nao Doi On midnight August 6th, 1986 I arrived in Arl- ington. At first I was surprised by many things: population, big and wide farms, beautiful nature. Several days after my arrival I was placed with Larry Gieseke’s family. I was very lucky to come into the Gieseke’s family because they were very helpful and gave me good advice. They made my stay very enjoyable and my younger Gieseke brothers made me feel right at home. Frist, when school started, I had difficulties to adopt, but when I faced a problem a teacher or a student was there to help me. I had problems with many American customs, too, but as time passed I got along better and better. During my stay it was interesting to discover the differences between the two cultures. By participating in several extracurricular ac- tivities I met many people and church activities taught me many new things. 1 think this year will have a great influence on my life when I return to Japan. I want to thank all who made my stay so enjoyable. 124 — YFU Getting An Impression of American Life Kristina Kuivas I arrived in Arlington just a week before school started. After choosing my classes and getting familiar with Arlington my great experience of high-school life. I enjoyed the school spirit and ac- tivities, especially basketball and although I had a tough time with practice I tried to give my best shot! It was fun to experience being a member of a team and I especially enjoy the spirit during games and the time afterwards. I also appreciated to be allowed to go to the homecoming celebration and all the other school activities, like the prom. All the A-GI students were very helpful and contributed to work to make this year very special to for me. Especially I want to thank my host-family, Richard Nagels, who gave me the impression of really being a family member. I want to thank everybody in Arlington for being so helpful and for making this year un- forgetable for me. Unni Stenholt On August 24th I arrived in Minnesota with about 150 other ASSE (American Skandinavian Student Exchange) students. The 9-hour flight from Norway was finally over. After a two-hour wait clearing customs I finally was welcomed into America by my new family, Les and Joyce Mor- reim. After making long awaited greetings, I left for my new home in Arlington for the next ten months. There are many differences, large and small, bet- ween Arlington and Norwegian life styles. For ex- ample, the school system differs in the freedom of choosing classes and in the student freedom in general, especially in grades 10 through 12. American food is somewhat different. There is so much more “junk food” thean we have in Norway. Sports is another area of difference. We dont’t have football, baseball or softball. Our most popular sports are soccer in the summer and skiing in the winter. One of the most interesting things I’ve learned about Minnesota and America is the importance placed on heritage. I’ve talked to many people who have ancestors from or relatives in Norway. In fact, I think the state motto should be, “Minnesota The land of 10,000 Norwegians”!!! I have enjoyed my stay in Arlington, especially the friendliness shown to me by the people in town and in school. YFU — 125 A Time to Move Forward... Graduation is a time to look back on the memories that filled the lives of the seniors over the past four years at Arlington-Green Isle.
