1984 Indian Arlington-Green Isle High School Arlington, Minnesota Co-Editors: Joe Melsha Connie Meyers Bus. Mgrs.: Robert Krebsbach Keith Kroells Advisor: Mrs. Mary Hultgren Rodrigo Andrade Robert Czech Nancy Glisczinski Kristine Grove Jean Kramer Paul Rohde Anne Vener Lisa Bode Denise Dols Tammy Grack Bev Kauffmann Sara Pinske Dana Stoeckman Mary Von Eschen LAND ofA-GI... Zoom in on a rural community, and imagine the variety of people that inhabit it. No doubt you’ll picture Arlington or Green Isle, and the people — you and me. There’s a strong bond in a small town which can be seen through the closeness of the people, especially in the crowded halls of school. You can walk down the corridors any school day and name most, if not all of the people you bump into or see. Recognizing these people at a glance you probably know what kind of a character they are. Teachers influenc- ed through the bonding effect relate to the students and blend in like just another student struggling to learn. Learn- ing is much easier and self-satisfying when you know that the teachers care whether you pass or fail (though that hasn’t been proven yet). You’re not just a name or a number on a piece of paper. After the big games the excitement at Beanies lingers in the atmosphere. Local businessmen and classmates can often be seen shaking one of the player’s hands or giving him or her a pat on the back for a job well done. Weekend activities revolve around fellow classmates, whether it’s cruising the drag, going to the local flick, or traveling to catch a glimpse at Shaw. As most everyone will agree, the land of A-Gl may not be the most exciting town ever known, but it sure is interesting. The beginning of school was a sad time and a happy time. Students were coming back from a summer filled with memories and hopes. School was improved by remodeling the lab and redecorating the gym. A-GI had an enrollment of 395 in grades 7-12 for the 83-84 school year. IT’S BACK TO SCHOOL FOR 395 A-GI HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS 1. School stands waiting for the crowds of kids to fill its halls. 2. Amy Brown and Dawn Weinand took advantage of being able to wear shorts to school in the 90 degree + temperatures. 3. The seniors are confused as to where to go after 12 years. 4. Dana Stoeckman gets life guarding instructions from Mr. Pat Baker and Mr. Dan Hislop. 5. Outdoor classes were a familiar sight during the school days of September. 5 6 HOMECOMING CLIMAXES ON FRIDAY WITH CORONATION, GAME AND DANCE Football practice, coronation practice, big-ball game, and rowdie attitudes filled homecoming week with ex- citement. The excitement peaked on Friday with the coronation of the king and queen. Although the Indians lost the football game against the Le Center Wildcats spirit was high throughout the evening. 1. 1983 Homecoming Royalty: Front Row: Steve Czech, Tricia Kloeckl, Chuck Haggenmiller, Julie Sommers, Tim Campbell, Barb Bates. The team reached its highpoint early by pouncing Gaylord-Winthrop and edging out Bird Island in overtime, both of which went on into the state championships. They went on to defeat N-YA and ended the season by soundly trouncing Mankato Loyola to finish with a 4 win — 5 loss record. The senior lead team showed their experience, pride, and determination by going to the wire with many of the Minnesota River Conference foes, which is billed as the toughest football conference in Minnesota. This year’s team had a great deal of rebuilding to do. After losing nine seniors, Mr. Don Sauter was able to pick from over eighty girls a team that placed 4th in Conference play. During District play, the sixth-rated Indians, knocked off third-rated Nicollet, second-rated Henderson, and bowed to first-rated Gaylord for the District title, ending their season with a record of 11-10. The bumps and bruises that these girls acquired over the season will fade with time, but the memories of the ex- citement will stay with them for many years. This year, the student council was responsible for putting banners representing the Minnesota River Con- ference schools, in our gym. They also sponsored Homecoming, Spirit Week, the Christmas Program, Sno Daze, Send your Sweetheart a Sucker, and a School Staff Appreciation Breakfast. Overall, the student council had a very productive year with many positive results from facul- ty and students. STUDENT COUNCIL GETS RESULTS Front Row: President Mary Von Eschen. He is the only person to blame for his failure, and the only one to be praised for his success. He is the only person wrestling his opponent as it is a one-to-one contest. The team won 4 meets and lost 7, and brought home a 1st, 3rd, and 4th place trophies. The team was hindered because not all the weight classes were filled, and several wrestlers were injured. They accomplished many things individually and as a team. Maybe the most im- portant of these was a feeling of pride in themselves and the school. FUTURE TEAMS SHOW MUCH POTENTIAL TALENT The A-GI girls’ basketball team had a trying season. They entered the season lacking height and experience, but played hard, determined to overcome these barriers. As the season progressed the girls gained poise and ex- perience in team play only to fall short in district play to number two ranked Nicollet. They shot their way to a 12-2 conference record and a MRC championship, the 1st since ’70, sweeping the Winthrop tourney and crushing Gaylord 81-53. The cagers swept through district play and fought their way to a District 14A championship by defeating Nicollet 47-43 in a battle of conference champs. After cruising past arch-rivai Montgomery in the region 4A semis, they confronted St. Anthony for the glory to appear at the “Big Show.” Dreams were shattered as a 12-foot jumper nipped A-GI with 3 seconds left after they clawed their way back from an early second half 12-pt. deficit. Lab days are hands-on experience days for the physics class. Many experiments are performed, proving well-known theories. 1. Many im- provements were made to update the science lab which serves the needs of five different grades (7, 8, 10, 11, 12) for prac- tical learning experiences and lecturing. There are only three other science labs in the state which must serve this dual pur- pose. The science lab seats 24 students com- fortably, but one hour it must house a crowd of 39. Before completion, the students and teachers had only the basic equipment of folding chairs and lap desks to work upon. Needless to say, the students were relieved when the final touches were made to the science lab, and science life returned to normal. 1. Hu i. ii V i a ' There seems to be many facts about the seniors of 1984 that others are unsure of. Are they or are they not true? 1. The seniors partied all the time Not all the time, just in months with an V in them (of course that’s excluding the summer months). 2. The seniors never obeyed the rules False. They couldn't remember all of the rules to break 3. The seniors were all alike Nope Some were male and some were female. 4 The seniors were a tough group of rowdies You bet. how else would they have made it through the 12 previous years without cracking up 5 The seniors planned on college after graduation Most did. but some planned to be bums Most seniors seemed to conform to these norms although a few of them cannot be proven. 58 59 JUNIORS CLASS OFFICERS Tricia Kloeckl — Vice-President Steven Czech — President Paul Rohde — Treasurer Robyn Rucks — Secretary (not pictured) Tamra Alsleben Scott Bergs Mike Bruns Denise Dols Brian Berg Lisa Bode Meianee Buckentine Nicholas Giesen Rachel Bremer Lisa Bulau Nancy Glisczinski Amy Brown Steve Czech Tammy Grack Duane Brueggemeier Jack Doetkott Jean Hamblin 60 Tom Harjes Joe Kistner Peggy Luskey Sara Pinske Robyn Rucks Peggy Heibel Jayne Kleist Mark Maeder Richard Reesen Jeff Rud Lee Hendrycks Tricia Kloeckl Michelle Marquardt RaNae Revier Mike Scharping Tammy Jensen Keith Kroells Carla Noack Paul Rohde Linnea Schauer Margie Kemp Gary Kurtzweg Lori Perschau Connie Rolf Brenda Schmidt 61 Ellen Solomonson Kipp Trebesch Brian Weber Bill Sutton Brian Truenow Theresa Weinand Dean Telthoester Sally Thoele Aaron Van Moorlehem Damon Voight Nancy Wolf Steven Woods Tammy Traxler Gary Voight Cherie Youngberg Carla Noack takes a break from her studies. Coach Dick Milinkovich honors the Region 4A runner-up basketball team. 120 You who arc athletes and comrades of a quest, You who are athletes yet unlike the rest, Listen to the words of one who has flown, for my words are a key to the victory I’ve known. To hope and to pray will not get you by, For a bird without wings cannot hope to fly. Build on your strengths and hide what is weak, as a mountain hides pebbles yet shows off its peaks. None has succeeded who has not failed, and you will know both for they walk the same trail. Strengthen your body, but neglect not your mind, for they are not separate, a fact you will find. Repetition, repetition, repetition I repeat is the best method known for mastering a feat. So give your best effort and be satisfied, for not more can you give if your best you have tried. It is said of a winner he’s not born but made, Yet who is the maker of the double “A” grade? Of all that I know there is nothing more true: “If a winner you are, the maker is you.” And should you know victory, forget not the rest, who aided your growth when you started your quest. Individuals are unique, but it’s the team that counts, for unity is strength and yields more amount. — Kolleen Casey 1. Official John Behrends reflects on the region basketball game, “85% of success is attitude. 2. “Where do you think you’re going Bob Krebsbach?” shouts Coach Pat Baker. 3. Coach Mel Cain hands out awards to some worthy wrestlers. 4. I can waste it — or use it for good, but what I do today is important, because — I am exchanging a day of my life for it! When tomorrow comes, this day will be lost forever leaving in its place something that I have traded for it. I want it to be gain, and not loss; good, and not evil; success, and not failure; in order that I shall not regret the price that I have paid for it. 125 A-GI BBS Best Wishes BBS ADS ’84 AMERICAN BREEDERS SERVICE John Krebsbach 964-5236 Arlington MN Congratulations Graduates AID ASSOCIATION FOR LUTHERANS Dale R.
