A-GI Indians Win Conference Title SEASON'S RECORD 8-1-0 Sept. 3, win over Bird Island 46-22 Sept. 10, win over Gaylord 26-7 Sept. 17, win over LeSueur 30-28 Sept. 24, win over Norwood-Young America 50-51 Oct. 29, win over Belle Plaine 28-22 Oct. 1, win over LeCenter 30-0 Oct. 8, lost to Montgomery 13-12 Oct. 15, win over New Prague 20-0 Oct. 22, win over Jordan 25-0 Co-Captains Mike Hartmann and Don Sauter Arlington-Green Isle cap- tured the Minnesota River Con- ference Championship with a 6-1 record as they defeated the Belle Plaine Tigers 28-22 Friday night. The Indians had to come from far behind and score 22 points in the last quarter to win, led by the passing of Mike Hartmann. Imagine first of all a team, even though it scored the first touchdown of the game, that was completely outplayed in the first half to the point of being down 16-6 at the half- way mark. Imagine, next, that same team being even more outplayed in the third quarter so that now the score was 22-6 against them. Imagine, next, that same team emerging like a giant from a sleep, and slapping down everything along the way to the tune of 22 points scored in about nine minutes of the final quarter, and emerging a 28-22 victor. As one A-GI rooter re- marked in a post-game com- ment, I wouldn't have given Arlington-Green Isle a plugged nickel for their chances to win. Another A-GI rooter coun- tered with, I wouldn't have given them a copper penny for their chances to win after three quarters of play. And then it happened ! Three quick touchdowns for 18 points, plus four extra points made on two two-points PAT's. Add all that to their six points made in the first half and it all comes out with 28 points for the game. And Belle Plaine had 22. The vicotyr gave Arlington- Green Isle an 8-1-0 seasons's record, including a 6-1-0 re- cord in the Minnesota River Conference for the conference championship. It is the first football championship won by Arling- ton-Green Isle High School since the consolidation of the area 17 years ago. There was no scoring in the first quarter although A -G1 came close on a Don Sauter interception of a Belle Plaine pass. Fifty-seven seconds in the second quarter (the clock show- ed 11:03 to go), Mike Pictured as right: Coach Czech presents championship trophy to Supt. Li apis Hartmann pitched the first of four touchdown passes, this one being a 65-yard bomb to Curt Erickson for the first score of the game. A-GI had two attempts for the PAT. The first was a carry-over for two points but it was called back and a 15-yard penalty was assesed against the Indians. The second PAT failed, making the score 6-0 in favor of Arlington-Green Isle. At this point, Belle Plaine took complete charge. In the third quarter, the Tigers took complete charge again. They moved the ball down to the 12-yard line. Next, they were penalized 15 yards for offensive holding. Shortly after, a Gosewisch pass to Traxler for about 20- yards was good for Belle Plaine's final TD. The PAT, a kick by Gosewisch, failed and Belle Plaine led 22-6. Then came the fourth quarter, and then came the A-GT fireworks. There was a disputed call by the officials. Maybe that was what got the A-GI team going! Whatever it was, it was touchdown, touchdown, touchdown -- three of them, all for A-GI. Eighteen seconds into the fourth quarter, Mike Hartmann, threw another bomb, this time to Don Sauter that again covered 65-yards for the TD. The PAT failed and it was 22-12 with Belle Plaine leading. After a series of three plays and after failing to make a first down, Belle Plaine had to punt. It was A-GI's ball and Hartmann moved them down the field to within scoring distance. Now, it was another Hartmann pass, once again to Don Sauter and it was good for eight yards and the third A-GI touchdown. The PAT was good on a pass from Hartmann to Tim Renneke, good for two points, and now the score was 22-20. with Belle Plaine still leading. There was still 6:48 to go in the game. Following the kicker, Belle Plaine moved the balldown to mid-field, but, on a crucial play for them, a Tiger pass failed and A-GI took over. Again Hartmann moved his team to within scoring distance. With 2:50 remaining in the game, Hartmann passed again, this time for nine yards to Tim Renneke for the fourth A-GI touchdown. The two-point (PAT) conversion was on a pass from Hartmann to Sauter and the score became 28-22 where it remained to the end of the game. And now A-GI rooters began to chant We're Number One, We're Number One. Belle Plaine's defeat last Friday was their first home- game loss in three years. The last time they lost a conference game on their own home grounds was in 1968 and it was Arlington-Green Isle that administered the loss to them, 13-7, that time, too. With Arlington-Green Isle winning the Minnesota River Conference championship by a 6-1-0 record, three other conference teams finished in a tie for second place, all of them — Montgomery, New Prague, Le Sueur -- having a 5-2-0 record. Hartmann, Sauter, Erickson, Renneke, and Mark Scott were the offensive stars for A-GI. Defensive standouts were Bob Boelter and Renneke. Mike Hartmann completed 17 of 30 passes good for 277 yards, including four touch- downs and two two-point conversions. The football champion- ship was the third consecutive championship won by Arlington Green Isle High School during the last nine months. First, it was the District 13 basketball championship won last spring under Coach Dennis Bergner; then it was the District 13 baseball championship also won last spring under Coach Larry Klunder j and now it is the Minnesota River Confer- ence football championship under Coach Dave Czech. Then again in the fifth inning Brazil led off with a single and after stealing second base was driven home by a single by Trocke.
