an uncertain dawn came slate-colored to the cold black slab of sky, its light unnoticed fora long time, ghosted by smoke haze shifting in low patterns over the fire barrels, huddled sleepers in absurd positions stirred in the new light-awakening to stale mouths, to dew-matted hair— and sat up, laboriously, to watch the sun find flaws in their nocturnal handiwork, emerging in sunlight the color of breakfast butter: tall rows of gay, freakish monsters standing on fragile pride and two-by-four limbs, covered with paper mache skin and stuffed tissue facades to hide vital organs; groaning with the whir of motors, creaking with birth rigors to live only a day... but gloriously! 22

Competition was, as usual, cutthroat. A fight almost ensued when members of one group charged onto the display site of another with threats of disqualification. The trend toward larger displays and louder sound effects continued this year. The booming “voice” of Lambda Chi’s “Indiac” robot delighted its creators, gave headaches to everyone else, and even forced several teachers in Wilson Hall to dismiss classes because they couldn’t shout above the din.
