THE CARL R. RENG CENTER, constructed ot no cost to the Arkansas taxpayer, contains cafeteria, bookstore, recreational facilities, offices and other features, the proceeds of which will help pay for the structure. Construction and renovation — two com- mon terms at Arkansas State. Since 1955 a military science building, li- brary, student union building, post of- fice, two men ' s dormitories, a women ' s dormitory, two denominational student unions and a field house have been constructed on the campus. During the same period, the present administra- tion building, education building, journalism building and printing plant have been renovated. Under construc- tion are a $700,000 administration building, $2V4 million women ' s dorm- itory, a $3% million men ' s dormitory and a $ 1 million fine arts building. On the drawing boards are plans for constructing a $2V4 million science building and a $1V2 million multi- story cafeteria complex.

A student pauses to watch massive, raw walls rise out of a quagmire of mud and construc- tion. He muses over I-beams and brick stacks and tar paper, dust- covered and dormant — but wait- ing. Days pass, and before him a creation takes form. The new building is stark and angular, un- scathed by sun and time like the older structures on campus. It is almost awesome in its florescent- lighted vanity But the students will tame it: rapid heels will pound the buffed tile into submission and youthful voices will take the blus- ter out of its echoes. And it will yield, slowly at first and blend . . .
