CLASS OF 104O OFFICERS President Edwin H. Garrison Vice-President . James D. Ramsey Secretary Gladys Fisher Treasurer imogene Baker Sponsor Dr. Ashley Robey As we, the class of 1940, gaze eagerly into the future, we also pause to look backwards through the four years of our college exper- iences. Entering Arkansas State College in the fall of 1936, we were somewhat awed by the newness and strangeness of situations and the collegiate atmosphere which surrounds us. It was through the efforts of adjusting ourselves to meet those standards that we received our first bit of education in this institution. In the early spring of 1937, we elected our freshman president, Newton Kil- lough, of Wynne To keep up the traditions cf the classes which went before us, we spon- sored a Freshman Hop and indulged in the usual picnics and parties which were planned for us by our lovable sponsor, the late Dean E. L. Whitsitt. By the beginning of our sophomore year, we felt very much at home on the campus, and our viewpoint of college life was revolutionized. It was a sophomore who conceived the idea of giving a Shipwreck Dance. This we did, and it was acclaimed a novel entertainment by all who attended. One of the more prominent boys of the student body, James Ramsey of Marma- duke, was our choice for president during that year. Under his guidance we enjoyed another happy and beneficial year together. Enrolling for our third year we, as upperclassmen, were more determined than ever to excel as students, to promote better fellowship among our classmates, and to prepare ourselves to bear the title of Seniors. Paul Allbright, of Marion, was chosen to lead us as president through our junior year. It was due to his efficient planning that the junior class spon- sored the most successful Junior-Senior Prom in the history of the college. Another outstand- ing event on our calendar was participation in the Senior Swing-Out. Thus another year ended and at last we were ready to step into a place of seniority, a place of dignity and achievement. Serving as Senior President has been Edwin Garrison, of Jonesboro. His keen leadership and congeniality augmented by the stability and careful guidance of Dr. Ashley Robey, our sponsor for the past three years, marks the climax of our college days at State. As we leave we take with us four years of academic progress, treasured memories of social and intellectual activities, and everlasting friends. Page 18 NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FORTY Seniors
