aying Tribute . ., . Because she is the junior United States Senator from Arkansas; because she holds an honorary degree from Arkansas State College; because she has done more for our College than any other single individual, and because she is a worthy successor to a worthy predecessor, her late husband, the Honorable Thaddeus H. Caraway, is this book, The 1937 Indian, dedicated to United States Senator Hattie W. Caraway. Mrs. Caraway has provided Arkansas State College with many advantages. The Reserve Officers ' Training Corps Regi- ment, for instance, is one of her major contributions to the progress of the College. She has always been ready to aid when help is needed; and, most notable, too, is the fact that her good work has not been done for political purposes, but because she has the best interests of the institution in her heart. Most of her work has been done out of the public view. The editors are proud to dedicate this edition of the Arkansas State College Indian to Mrs. Caraway. We feel that of all the people connected with the College directly or indirectly United States Senator Hattie W. Caraway is the most deserving of this honor.

Into the shadows in the past three years, have gone three of Arkansas State College ' s most promising young men. Melvin Horton of Lamar, Willie Alsup of Bay, and Guy Davis of Jonesboro, each an athlete, and each a prince, have departed from, this life, to the sorrow of their friends and relatives. Melvin Horton, who had graduated in the spring of 1934, died that summer in a Jonesboro hospital fol- lowing several weeks of ill- ness. Willie Alsup, a sopho- more in 1935, was killed in an accident while return- ing to his home from an out-of-state trip. He was killed in the fall of 1935. Guy Davis, a freshman in 1936. also lost his life in an accident. He was killed while working on the con- struction of a building in the summer of 1936. Being mindful of the valuable lives which have thus left our midst, the editors pause to honor their memory.
