As in basketball, the Matadors were not given much of a chance in wrestling. But as the season progressed under first-year coach Glen Mayle, it became apparent that the AWC wrestlers would have to be taken seriously in Arizona Junior College Athletic Associa- tion competition. The Matadors breezed right through a 15-meet schedule with an 11-4 record. Two of those losses rful Glendale, a team who was supposed to win the state wres- came at the hands of powe tling title, while the other two defeats were from out-of-state opponents. Those two setbacks to out-of-state schools came on the day when the Western grapp- lers wrestled five matches in one day. During the season Western was selected to host the state junior college wrestling tour- nament and the Matadors came through in fine fashion by capturing the state champion- ship for the first time in the school's 10-year history. The state meet, which was one of the closest in the history of the Arizona Junior Col- lege Athletic Association, saw only nine points separate the five teams entered in the tour- nament. Western took first with 60w points while Central Arizona College was second with 58 points. Phoenix College was next with 57 V2 points while pre-tournament favorite Glen- dale was fourth with 52 V2 points. Mesa was last with 51 points. Ca turin individual state titles for the Matadors were 118-pound Eddie Knecth and P 8 126-pound John Knecth. Second place finishes went to 177-pound Dick Altenreid, 190- pound Bill Moody and unlimited wrestler Dan Prickett. Matador Keith Rhodes, a 150- pounder, was third as was 158-pounder Steve Campos.
