Western College got started, W f ,ara ia, , most followers of the Arizona 0 l l'lll l ' J ' Junior College Athletic As- sociation figured it would be a year of rebuilding for the Matadors. Before the season started, the Westerners lost forwards Bruce Battle and Clarence Brown, two of the best players in the country and definite All- America material. Both left the school because of disciplinary reasons. Then midway through the season, just after AJCAA competition got under way, starting guard Joe Sills was declared academically ineligible along with ace reserve Arnon Baptiste. However, Coach Joedy Gardner and his as- sistant Jim Amick believed in their team and it proved right as they substituted pride in place of talent to produce 20 victories in 27 regular season outings. 134 The Matadors placed second behind Scottsdale Community College in the AJCAA race and went to the Region l playoffs in St. George, Utah. Be- cause of the Feb. 28th deadline, El Matador was unable to have the results of the regionals or the nationals-providing the Matadors won the Region I championship for the third straight year. AWC qualified for the regionals with a 13-3 con- ference record. The Matadors also ended the reg- ular season with a seven-game winning streak. During the season Arizona Western took fifth place in the Thunderbird Classic in Casper. WY0' ming, and the championship in its own Matador Classic. The low point in the season came January 29111 when Imperial Valley College, a team Western beat earlier 82-67, clipped the Matadors 56-55 on a con- troversial last second goal tending charge against Western's Dennis Marschall. With 30 seconds left in the game, AWC forward Barry Barnes, who SCC coach lvan Duncan said couldn't play Scottsdale, tied the game at 68-68 with two goals. The pair of buckets also sent the game into overtime before Western won 73-72. The win also clinched at least a tie for second place in the conference race for the Matadors. Starting for the Matadors most of the year were center Dennis Marschall, forwards Barry Barnes and Phil Filer, and guards Ray Leary and Carl Bird. Top reserves for the Matadors were Ken Lebsock, who canned a 73-foot shot against Scottsdale, Bill Truman, Carl Coopwood, Bruce Cushing, Lee Simmons, Joe Davis, and Billy Loftis.
