VARSITY BASKETBALL ABOVE: Alan Johnson, Leon Burreson, Ed Anderson, Gary Vlasak, Dan McGinnity, Coach Waage, Craig Gruenberg, Jon Erickson, Brian Nelson, Eric Anderson, Jim Wenger. KNEELING: Manager John Pittz. Not Pictured: Robin Berg’ Manager Ken Frei. With the return of the two regulars and one injured player from last year's team coach Waage added two reserves and painstakingly molded a very successful team, second only to Monticello in the conference. The Orioles had a better conference record (12-3) than nine other teams including all of the Maxi division entries. Argyle lost both meetings with Monticello and as usual lost to Brodhead there but later avenged that defeat by gloriously annihilating the Cardinals in t h e divisional play-offs by 30 enormous points 88-58. The Orioles had the offensive potential of having any one of its five regulars, Eric Anderson, Jon Erickson, Craig Gruenberg, Leon Burreson and Jim Wenger, score twenty points in a game and were ably supported by two fine reserves, Ed Anderson and Gary Vlasak. While offensively scoring 64.3 points per game the Orioles had an ever-improving defense which allowed opponents only 56.3 points, an average of eight less points than Argyle. Strangely enough all three non-conference games were recorded as losses as the team did not perform up to its potential. Highlights of the season include a last second shot by Eric Anderson to win a close game at Bameveld, poor Holy Name getting only eleven points in the first half to Argyle's 48, our thrilling victory at New Clarus where we twice fought back from eight and nine point deficits to win by five, laying it on Pecatonica, beating Black Hawk, a physical win at Juda, Eric's superb assists against Bameveld at Argyle which frustrated them so they got even more physical than Juda, Jon Erickson's two 30-point games, and finally Brodhead's humiliation sparked by Jon's 65-footer to tie quarter one at 20-all as the Orioles went on to their greatest offensive production of the year. Season leadersinthe various categories were Eric Anderson, Erickson and Gruenberg-272, 262, 241 points, Erickson and Gruenberg- 179, 151 Rebounds, Erickson-. 498 FG pet., Eric Anderson-. 732 FT pet., 112 assists. But individual talent notwithstanding the greatest asset of the 72-73 Orioles was their ability to unselfishly combine, their efforts into an effective offense and a superb defense. WINS--A 1 b a ny 66-50 and 76-40, Bameveld 59-57 and 67-52, Juda 77-70 and 75-64, Belleville 69-49, Holy Name 78-41, New Clarus 58-53, Pecatonica 78-49, Black Hawk 58-49, Brodhead 88-58.
