According to a pre-season poll of league coaches Argyle was again destined to be a cellar dweller in 1972 after winning only one game the previous year. However, the Orioles developed into a title contender only to be denied the league championship by losing to cochamps Belleville on a missed extra point, 16-14, and to Black Hawk, 26-8, while playing under poor field conditions. A squad of 38 players led Argyle on its best football campaign in many years as the Orioles compiled a 7-2 season record and finished only one game out of first place. The Orioles opened their season with two easy victories, beating both Holy Name and Juda by twenty points. In the non-conference game against Cassville the defense shone by intercepting four passes and the offense finally took charge in the second half to defeat them by three touchdowns. Argyle made it 4-0 by tearing apart New Glams' heralded d e f e ns e which so far hadn't been scored on. The Glarners couldn't cope with the Eric Anderson to Jon Erickson passing which produced two of our three touchdowns. Belleville dealt us our first defeat in a game featuring two evenly matched teams. Only a missed two-point conversion prevented the tie. Barneveld's rugged defense stopped the Orioles for one half but a big second half brought victory. Traditional rival Pecatonica was our homecoming opponent. The Vikings had upset in mind but a 67 yard touchdown run by quarterback Eric Anderson proved too much to overcome. Black Hawk ended any Argyle title hopes by defeating us with their unyielding defense. In the season finale Argyle had to over-take Brodhead three times to fi-nally win on two touchdowns by Tom Ritschard in the final two minutes. Argyle was a strong offensive power leading the league in passing and finishing second with 2178 total yards. The Orioles posed three major threats and all three were honored as all-conference selections. Eric Anderson was by far the league's best quarterback completing 65 of 133 passes for 1122 yards and twelve TDs. He made it both ways by also being selected as a defensive back. Jon Erickson was a unanimous choice at split end as grabbed 20 passes for 326 yards and 4 TDs. Fullback Tom Ritschard rushed 146 times for 770 yards, caught 19 passes for 294 yards and scored 15 TDs to capture the league scoring title with 102 points.
