Since the varsity team needed many sophomores who would normally have played with the J. V. team the boys who played were woefully lacking in experience. In their last six games they were only out of one game and possibly could have won the remaining five had some of the players not been limited in quarters played by being called up to the varsity squad. Jim Skattum learned to dirve to the basket with success, Gary Vlasak began to time his rebounds well by the season's end, Jim Wenger shot free throws well. Leon Burreson finally lound his shooting eye. Carl Weibel developed from a helter-skelter player to a team performer, Randy Hanson had some fantastic shots from “his spot” on the floor, Steve Hyland though short was not intimidated by larger opponents and Tim Hendrickson was steadily improving before transferring to Blanchardville. (Coach Hyland and team members actually applauded Tim's basket scored against us in the final game so great had the team spirit been developed.) Jim Skattum scored 166 points in leading the team in that category and had the most assists. Gary Vlasak had the most rebounds (134), most fouls (48) and most tied up opponents (33). Jim Wenger was a standout on defense and had the most recoveries (35) and led with a .565 free throw percentage. Leon Burreson had the second best free throw percentage (.542) and had the least number of fouls for a regular (17). The J. V. Orioles were outclassed by their opponents in many categories on the floor but their spirit was high and they had a fine following of faithful fans who appreciated their improvement. 26
