FOOTBALL CONFERENCE RUNNER-UP The Argyle High School football team enjoyed one of its most successful campaigns in recent years. In fact, this was the best record since the undefeated team of 1948. In the first game the offense did more than its share of work as it rolled up 45 points to South Wayne's 27. Against Juda the boys got off to a slow start in the rain but came up with a surge of points and won 53 to 27. The offense was checked in the next game before it could get its normal output, but the defense held Orfordville to 6 points making the victory possible. Homecoming was a very happy occasion as the offense got in gear again and rolled to a 51 to 26 victory over New Glarus. Having four impressive victories the locals were invaded by Brodhead who hoped to stay in contention for the league championship; it proved to be a very rough game but our boys had their minds made up to win and did so by a score of 19 to 14. The next game was with our arch-rival Blanchardville at their homecoming. After the team made a slow start it received a little pep talk at half time and took the field the second half looking like new and went on to win 47 to 19. The puzzling thing about this game was that the boys couldn't figure out why Coach Schober wanted to win it so badly. The lastgame of the season was played against Belleville with the championship at stake. Practically every football fan in Argyle and the surrounding area turned out for the game only to see the boys go down to dismal defeat 45 to 0. Our team couldn't get aroused and Belleville couldn't be stopped. On another given night the score might have been reversed. 23
