SOCIAL STUDIES AND HISTORY Citizenship, World History, American History and Social Problems are the four courses offered in the above-mentioned field of study. Mr. Roth who teaches social studies is pointing out locations on the map during the study of current events. The history courses are taught by Mr. Schober. ART Mrs. Arnot is shown here checking the art work of five interested students: Anita Beem, David Anderson, Anne Marie Brattrud, Diane Flanery and Rodney Paulson. An education in art is valuable to us since it not only teaches the basic artistic principles but also gives us an appreciation of art which is so essential in lifting us above the level of a human animal. ENGLISH Taught by Mr. Morgan, this English section is obviously interested in one of his many amusing stories. Other sections of English are under the leadership of Mrs. Ross. Literature and grammar have received special emphasis this year. 29

LATIN Latin class as taught by Mr. Morgan is valuable inmaking it possible for us to better understand the problems of the English language as well as being of use to those who wish to have a foreign language for college entrance. SPEECH Speech classes teach us the basic art of communication. It is an art which we use every day for the rest of our lives--not only in the four years of high school. The Freshman students taking part in the recording of their play-reading are: John A. Gierhart, Susan Flanagan, Alice Reed and Donald Nelson. SPANISH AND RUSSIAN The foreign languages of Spanish and Russian have been offered for the first time this year and have been found to be very interesting as well as hard work. The lessons have been given by correspondence with a monthly trip to a nearby school for more personal attention. Donnie Rossing is showing Linda Ronnerud, Marjorie Nelson and Marilyn Nelson the intricasies of the tape recorder which is used to improve their pronunciations of these living languages. 28
