CLASSES There' the art cla » drawing Picture of bird , or a tree. Someone' experimenting On soaps, in chemistry. Someone else is drilling On verb , in English class. Glee Club is singing a ong Of a merry lad and lass. In gym a fast furious game Of handball being played. In cooking class we see and smell The bread that' being made. In physic we're building bridges. In typing we test our speed. In sewing we learn how much Material we shall need. Next everything's a nimble; Confusion and hurry teign. Then a bell ring ; there's order. And class goes on again. Religion, morality, and knowledge being necessary to good govern- ment and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.—Thomas Jefferson. It is estimated that the schools have never absorbed as much as four per cent of the national income, that America spends about five times as much for automobiles as it does for public schools, and that the proportion of the national income devoted to public education is lower now than it has been at any time since 1922.
