Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1987 volume:

The Pilot 'Breakin’ the Mold” 1986-87 Argenta-Oreana High School Argenta, Illinois i Breakin’ The Sheesh! Not ANOTHER yearbook with a strange theme nobody understands! Why can't we just have The Pilot' back with a plain, simple cover and no silly little theme? 'Breakin' the Mold?' Didn't anybody tell those yearbookers that break- dancing is OUT and was never IN in the first place?!? You just don't get it, do you? 'Breakin' the Mold' doesn't refer to breakdancing! I think the yearbookers are trying to show everyone that some traditions are made to be BROKEN. A-O is a school that's not afraid to do that now and then. But still, wanting to break traditions doesn't seem like enough to base a theme on.” Well, look around — haven't you seen some Mold!(?) changes around school this year? Oh, I understand! Like Mr. Zachary and his Good Monday morning' announcements? Exactly. Nobody could get along without those, right? Right. And trying to get used to not eating lunch in the gym! Yeah, but we did get an ala carte line and new pop machine out of it. Don't forget about all the new teachers we got, our first sock hop, a newspaper staff, and all those other tradition-breaking changes that were made! I think you're getting the idea! A-O is a special school, and hopefully people who go to school here can learn that changes aren't always bad. 1. Sophomore Jarrod D. is in good hands with Junior Dave M. 2. Not another beach day! 3. Doug B. shows us how much he enjoys the new pop machines! 4. Put on a happy face! 3. Darn it. Scott. I told you not to buy a car from Berry's World of Wheels. 6. Cause I'm a woman ... 7. I like the night life. I like the boogie ... 8. When we said Breakin' the Mold. Gina took us literally! 9. Double Trouble 2 Masako Oto, our Japanese exchange student, says that although the people here are basically the same as in Japan, our lifestyle is quite different. When asked what was the strangest thing about America, she answered, The short, fat cucumbers. Japanese cucumbers are long and thin. She thinks it strange that kids here go to bed so early. She liked going to school here because there were fewer tests, and she did not have tc wear a uniform. The things she missed most while here were family, friends, and fish. She believes American food is too fattening. To all the students at A-OHS she says, Thank you very much for being my friend and for helping me and accepting me.” (T.U.) 4 Exchange Student In Memoriam Dustin H. Dusty” Kippenhan The yearbook staff wishes to dedicate the yearbook to the mem- ory of Dusty Kippenhan, who was a junior at Argenta-Oreana High School. In Memoriam 6 Student Life 1. I just LOVE yearbook photographers! 2. Chris F. and Wendy C. dressed up for freshman energy day. 3. Senior Kristi R. as a Roman maiden. 4. Darrel J. learns the art of drying dishes. 3. Junior Kim S. attempting a bubble. 6. Brandon K. lost in thought. 7. Hair that holds up even when you don't. Student Life 7 What word strikes fear in the heart of every Freshman? Initiation. Mr. Za- chary's announcement that there would be no formal Freshman initiation sparked angry protests from Seniors and caused many a Freshman to breathe a sigh of relief. The remedy? Freshman Energy Day! This year's activities were a little different than usual. Boys dressed as their favorite cartoon characters, and the girls dressed as Rambo. Each of the Freshmen were assigned a Senior guide (what really happened was the Seniors got slaves for a day!). No Freshman Energy Day” is complete without a full school assembly. The Seniors thought of many inhumane things to make the Freshmen do, like making the whole class play leapfrog.” Phil Stepping, dressed as Bullwinkle, was voted Most Talented Freshman, thanks to his charming rendition of Da Doo Run Run. Bananas may not make good microphones, but they can be great snacks. Right. Phil? (D.B.) 8 Freshman Energy Day Freshman Energy Day 1. Who would of thought .. . Phil Stepping a teeny-bopper' 2. These five girls were chosen to save America. ). The Freshmen line up for more leapfrog. 4. Heather Steele is chosen as the best dressed Freshman girl. V Craig Deverall is ordered to shine Ted Dilley's boots. 6. Who are these strange aliens in the middle of our gym floor .' 7. Heather Steele gets the pleasure of throwing a pie into Darren Gillespie's face. 8. Ginger Wortman is tied up at the moment. Freshman Energy Day 9 Homecoming 1986 Spirit Week 10 Homecoming Homecoming Week was exciting and different for everyone. The Student Council worked hard to plan new activities that we could remember forever. I'm sure Mrs. Knappen (a.k.a. Hot Lips) will even tell her great-grandchildren. Tuesday, the Juniors dominated the skits with their amazing rendition of Shout followed by the classes letting their hair down in some rousing games of volleyball that went on and on and on .. . But on Wednesday, dressed in beach togs, we watched our classmates swallow their pride and run around after pigs. Thursday, we wallowed in the mud for the tug-o-war while hippies and flower children looked on. On Friday, a new definition of raw meat was added to the books for the Male Beauty Contest. Senior Marty Watrous was deeply touched as he was crowned Mr. Bomber 1986. The coronation, dance, parade, and especially the game made the 1986 Homecoming the best of the 25 Football Homecomings yet! (S.K.) Homecoming 11 Homecoming 1986 What ho! A large line of floats and screaming Bomber fans threading through the streets of our fair city! Could it be? The homecoming parade at A-OHS? Spectators exclaimed that the floats were the best ever created! The juniors' Up Where We Belong' floated away with first prize followed by the hard-working and law- abiding seniors with Danger Zone. The fresh- men worked around the clock for third place, and sophomores — oh. well, we'll keep trying. Milford? Who's that? This common excla- mation was heard all over Bomberland after we whomped them 48-0. The win put Argenta- Oreana on the map and propelled us into the play-offs,” said Coach Saunches. Hey! Hey!” he proclaimed with pride. (SK) 1. Junior Shirley Riggs at attention with a smile ... of course. 2. The Freshman float clocked in at 3rd place. 3. Let’s hear it for the Sophomore class effort ... Last place was their destiny. 4. The Junior class float was up where it belonged at 1st place for the third year in a row! 5. The Bearcats found out what the 2nd place Seniors meant by a Danger Zone. 6. The pom pons lead off the parade. 7. 25 years ago they were fighting for Bomber honor. 8. On Argenta! On Argenta! 9. The Bearcats were up in smoke. 10. Here's to the future! Homecoming 13 1986 Homecoming Coronation and Dance 1. Past. Present, and Future: Tina Lewis. Jason Kary, Lisa Fyke. Marty Watrous. You don't go to Paris to experience it! It's all here in your own hometown! The city of lights, the city that rocks, the city that never stops! You guessed it — Argenta! It was all here on that endless night. The night when spirits were high. When love and elation reached the threshold of heaven. We can only hope that this amazing saga in our own private fantasy land will continue in our hearts and the hearts of future generations. — The 1986 Homecoming Dance — S.S. and S.K. Homecoming 15 Prom .. This year's prom was a time of flourishing love. The theme was Masquerade, and the song was In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel. The colors were red, silver, and black. It was an evening of wonder — you felt as if you were in a very classy place, and being all dressed up you had a feeling of utter awe. Following the dance everyone ran home and changed into more casual clothing and hurried to Spare Time Lanes for post-prom. There everyone either bowled, ate, watched roller derby on TV, or watched the clock for four hours. Everyone was ready for some sleep by the end of the adventure. But it wasn't the end — it was the beginning of a brand new day. S.S., S.K., J.U. 16 Prom and Post Prom! 1. Don't it make ya wanna dance' 2. Sophomore Heather Taylor trips the light fan- tastic. 3. FINESSE Few sights will ever be prettier than the pile-up after Boyd’s touchdown, stated Coach Saunches, referring to the 6-0 overtime victory in the first game of the state playoffs. The team had a great sea- son, making it to the state playoffs for the second year in a row. This time, however, they reached the quarterfi- nals. Highlights of the 1986 season included a 54-6 win at Havana. In that game, the Bombers broke a state re- cord with ten interceptions in one game, two of which were made by defensive line- men! This was a year for indi- viduals. also. Senior co-cap- tain Jeff Watson was chosen for the East- West Coaches All State Game, and made the first team of the All Macon County Team. Marty Watrous and Doug Boyd, the other co-captains, were both chosen for the second team of the All Macon Coun- ty Team. Jeff Watson, Doug Boyd, and John Luttrell were the MVP’s on offense for the Bombers. On defense, Marty Watrous, Marc Padrutt, and Steve Cool took the MVP honors. The season finally ended in a quarterfinal loss to St. Teresa. The team had no- thing to be ashamed of, though, and the 1986 season is sure to be one we will never forget! D.B. The pigeon? Yes, the same one that har- assed the football team. Stacey Bevins was the MVP, and she led the team in many areas. Mrs. Fitzgerald was elated to beat Maroa-Forsyth in re- gional not only for the school's sake; her sister just happens to coach M-F volleyball. One new thing we had was the Elite Serving Club. To be in this club one had to consecutively serve 50, 75, 100, or 200 serves. The co-captains were Suzette Shafer and Sta- cey Bevins. Both Stacey Bevins and Amber McDaniel broke school records. A- wards were given to Stacey Bevins (MVP and Defensive), Tami Domescik (Most Im- proved), Amber Mc- Daniel (Serving per- centage), Selina Bra- den (Hustler). On the whole Fm sure that everyone is proud of the volleyball team and wish for good luck in the yeags to come. (SS) ENDURANCE Cross-country is pain. But it is also a very individual and competitive sport. An aver- age cross-country runner runs about 30-35 miles per week (6 days a week). A cross- country race can be set up anywhere. Fields, golf courses, around schools, woods, the back of a dam (Shelbyville), campgrounds (Friends Creek, which is where the Bombers home course is). The actual race is 3.1 miles long, and usually has an abundance of hills in it. Cross-country might not be the most glamorous sport but it definitely builds char- acter, strength and is the best sport to par- ticipate in if you want to get in shape. The final outcome of the ball game was always in doubt because this was a team that on many oc- casions came from far behind to take the game down to the wire. It was a team that matured over the season and won 6 out of its last 8 games and claimed the Regional Cham- pionship for A-O, its fifth such champion- ship. The final record was 14-11. We graduated four seniors from the squad: Stacey Bevins, Amy Schultz, Lisa Fyke, and Joy Sheraden. We thank them for their contribution to A-O basketball and wish them well in the years to come. After a victory over Maroa Forsyth, the Bombers were up- set in the opening round of the Macon County Tournament by Blue Found, but recovered to win the Consolation Champion- ship. During Christmas the team improved and after an impres- sive win at Clinton, they were ready to play in the Shelbyville Tournament. Seeded sixth the Bombers upset 1 seeded Springfield Calvary and finished third in the tournament with Scott Watson making the all tournament team. Jeff Watson was the MVF and leading rebounder for the season, and Doug Boyd and Brian Ennis were the senior co-captains. During the season there were many memorable moments. For example, upset- ting Springfield Calva- ry and individuals’ achievements that will always remain with the players. Our seniors, Jeff, Doug, Brian, and and Mike, will be missed, but underclassmen will be ready to accept the challenge of the new season to come. 1. Senior Brian Knnis defends the basket. 2. Who are the most loyal fans, traveling far and near (in some cases on the equipment bus) to show their support to players.'' The cheerlead- ing squads, that's who! Being a cheerleader, wrestlerette, or pom- pon isn't just fun and game. Before even be- coming one, one must usually attend a clinic for about a week, then try out doing various things like smiling widely as you go down in- to the splits or doing the infamous school rou- tine. Once past the tryouts, one must spend after- noons learning cheers or pom routines, mak- ing posters, and doing various other things to encourage school spirit and participation. Remember, regardless of the final score. the cheering squads do their best to make each game special. D.B. The Boys Varsity Cheerleaders pose for the camera. Cheerleadin£ 35 1. For a rebuilding year we didn’t do badly — we ac- complished most of our goals, comment Coach German. Those goals in- cluded two members, Marc Padrutt and Jeff Watson, participating in the state meet. Marc and Jeff were the senior co-captains. Marc placed second in high hurdles at sectional and reached the semi-finals at state. He also competed at the Champaign Area Best meet, placing sixth in both hurdle events. Marc was chosen as the most valuable member for the season. Jeff Watson was the top point man with 171-% points. He won both the shot and dis- cus at the Macon County meet and finished second in discus at Decatur Area Best meet. Jeff won discus at sectionals and placed third at state. This was the third consec- utive year the boys' track team has placed in state. Their overall dual record was 6 wins and 12 losses. It’s the Argenta-Oreana baseball team! After beating Maroa-Forsyth in a super close and exciting game, they were the regional champs and went on to section- als. The seniors this year were Doug Boyd, Mike Eller. Brian Ennis, Shane Cole, and Marty Watrous. These five were start- ers and will be missed greatly by everyone on the team. The team's key to success, you may ask? Lots of sunflower seeds and a little team work. That’s what made the 1986-87 baseball team so great. If there weren't a yearbook staff, there would be no yearbook. So you see, you should be very grateful to them. The yearbook staff does many different jobs. We compose the layout of pages, crop pictures after making sure the necessary pictures have been taken, type copy, and many other fun things. We all work really hard in order to put out a good product, and we do the best we can in order to satisfy our customers. This has been a very different experience for me. Now I realize how much time is put into making yearbooks. Y.R. Co Editors Jodi Uhler and Diana Brisch. Do you mind? I'm trying to work!” A picture s worth a thousand words! We prevailed upon Mrs. Luedke to serve as our faculty advisor, and a staff was chosen. The staff gives its all in order to make THE AVIATOR the best paper it can be. Special thanks should be given to Mrs. Luedke, Steve Wright, Jodie Haywood, Shirley Riggs, Re- becca Kelpzig, and Jim Shipley for actually putting the paper together, often working on it after school. 1. Call to the question! The motion carries! You may have heard these phrases floating out of Mr. Kimler's room before, along with a lot of debating, brainstorming, planning, and a little nonsense. All of this signifies that the student council is hard at work. They're probably busy planning dances, homecoming, service projects, or an assem- bly. Along with the work they do for our school, they're also active in the State and District Student Council Associations. They have two offices on the district board and attend many of their workshops and conventions. But they also have a lot of fun! Who else has the privilege of working at the cage, spending all of their homerooms with Mr. Kimler, sacrificing their Saturdays to decorate for dances — we should all be so lucky! S.K. 1. Row 1: S. Mr. Kahila agreed to sponsor, and the Science Club evolved. What kinds of crazy stuff hap- pened this year at Science Club meetings? When we asked Mr. Ka- hila, he informed us that this year not too much happened because of organization problems. But he's al- ready thinking about the 1987-1988 Science Club, so keep it in mind! (How's that for advertising?) Science Club members are: Row 1: Ethan Freimuth, Jeanne Jontry, Melissa Ward, Troy Smith. Row 2: Jason Anderson, Don Long, Jody Stickles. D.B. Do you ever find yourself hope- lessly board during lunch? This year Mrs. Levey found a remedy, and the Chess Club was formed. Although called the Chess Club, they don't participate in competi- tions and are not organized as a club. But it's still a fun way to spend a lunch hour in the library, and it beats doing homework! The Chess Club is made up of Eric Bertrand, Bill Ragan, Jason Anderson, Andrew Jones, and Jody Stickles. D.B. Science and Chess Clubs 49 Drama Club Presents 'The Matchmaker” and A Night of Entertainment.” The Drama Club had an exciting year! Along with their full production of The Matchmaker, they presented a series of short plays for A Night of Entertainment. Both shows were really successful and the casts had a lot of fun. For all their work (in between hot chats”) it was worth it. The Matchmaker, their first play, involved a lot of work. With the help of Theater 7 they had nice costumes, built elaborate sets, and had a lot of nice props. (Too bad the sets wouldn't stand up, though!) For the rest of the plays, the students got a chance to direct and organize, along with act. Fm sure they learned a lot and everything turned out great! We re all looking forward to next year. (S.K.) Office helpers do anything from deliver newspapers in the morning, deliver counselor passes, pick up attendance slips and make a list of absentees. They also an- swer phones, give messages to teacher and students, and deliver announce- ments. Teachers’ aids have various re- sponsibilities such as grading papers, recording grades, typing, making copies, and running errands. They go to Richland, take a test, and eat barbeque and three kinds of pie. Sound good.'' Well, it s definitely an adventure. The test categories are English, biology, chemistry, math, drafting, com- puters, and physics. Each person may take two tests, but no more than four people on a team can take the same test. Jason Anderson and Jody Stickles won awards in biology. For the rest of us, just a taste of the campus life at Richland was enough reward and some- thing we ll always treasure. S.K. 32 Teachers' Aids, Office Helpers. JETS French Club If anyone can make it to 2-4 years of French, they receive the title of French Club Member. The rewards of French come during the third and fourth years, or Ad- vanced French. Advanced French students do all kinds of great things like making popcorn in the concession stand, selling sta- tionery, and getting up at 7 a.m. on a Saturday to sit at school all day for a rummage sale. But there is a reason for all of these money-making schemes — this summer Ad- vanced French is going to Canada for a week! Another delicious French tradition is the famous fon- due party. It's a chance for French students to get a taste of some French cuisine and really pig out! So, as you can see, French isn't just another class; it's an adventure! D.B. 1. We left early Sunday morning and got back late Monday evening. We spent all day Sunday at Six Flags and returned to our hotel so tired that we ordered pizza and spent some time swimming. On Monday one group went to a big mall and the other group went to the Arch and Lacledes Landing (one of the spots where Escape from New York was shot.) We saw many old ware- houses which had been restored and remodeled into small shops and novelty stores. Later the two groups went to Union Station. After eating at the Spaghetti Factory, we left for home. (G.E.) Senior Poll Winners 1. MOST TALKATIVE David Ozier. Cathy Boliek 2. MOST ATHLETIC Doug Boyd. Stacey Bevins 3. MOST MUSICAL Linda Jordan. Our finances and the way we have of winning things haven't hurt our ego! But we do win because we work — HARD! Junior David Batthauer says, I think our class is the most motivated and the hardest working. How can we NOT be motivated when we have such enthusiastic officers (or slave drivers)? People from other classes view us a little differently. I think they are pretty crazy, says Freshman Tiffany Harper about the junior class. Sophomore Scott Watson, when asked about the juniors, said, A little weird, but I think they'll manage. Thanks, Scott!Junior Mike Parker sums us up when he stated, We are DARN swell .. . not only do we have the freshest dudes, we have the hottest babes. (J.U.) CLASS OFFICERS: Steve Kuhn. Jerry Zachary attended Colorado Col- lege, where he played football for one year (ask him about his football injury!) He also went to the U of 1, Eastern, and Indi- ana University. Mr. Zachary lives in Decatur. He's mar- ried and has two kids, ages three and five. Trusting in the Lord helps him to have a positive outlook. One of his quotes to live by is found in Proverbs 17:22 — A happy heart is a good medicine. Mr. Zachary's held a wide variety of jobs, anywhere from guidance counselor to Head Resident at a U of I residence hall to assistant professor at Eastern. Even so, he likes the faculty and student attitudes at Argenta, and when asked, he said, I can't think of a better place to work. Thanks! 92 Administration Secretaries Mrs. Linda Dowling Unit Secretary Mrs. Margie Elliott High School Secretary Mrs. Fran Fear High School Secretary Some people think that being a secretary is just typing and answering the phone. Wrong. Mrs. Fear and Mrs. Elliott both agree that their jobs keep them on a very tight schedule during the day. Mrs. Fear has worked in the district for the past thirteen years. She has worked at the Middle School, the ne Grade School, and now at the High School. Mrs. Elliott has worked in the district for seven years. She has worked at the Middle School, the New Grade School, and is now at the High School. In addition to his regular classes, he also helped Mr. German with the boys' track team. He likes central Illinois because .he has friends and acquaintances here. In the future he'd like to keep teaching at Argenta, and possibly return to college for his Ph.D. or study law. MR. DAVID SAPP Social Science MR TOM SAUNCHES English MRS. Do you remember? — When Mrs. Knappen kissed the pig (and the farmer) during homecoming week? — When the bomb threat kept us away from lunch for half an hour? — When X and his doorstop thefts? — Welcoming Masako Oto into our lives? — How silly we acted at the football games last fall (we were so young and foolish then. — Cheering the football team to playoffs, and the wrestling and baseball teams to the re- gional championships? — The Senior debate over their group pic- ture? — Seeing your friend (or yourself) graduate? Not everything about the school year was enjoy- able. Homework was not much fun, and studying for finals is always a pain. But now that the year is over, we can look back on it and know that it was well worth it. Closing 101 Cool seniors. Here's to A-O. Wendy B. cooking food. Yeeeees Steve C. trying out his new earring he got lor Christmas. Lunch — our favorite subject. Laurie G. and her natural smile. Steve K. munching down in the garage. The hoard of Mr. X.
